My advice would be to ask them if they have it in another available format. What other info do you have, what kind of client, what kind of job? If they are architects, chances are it was an autocad model brought into max. First job for this client, or your first pro job?

both, my first time working with this client, and my first professional job... with the oppertunity of further work...

trying to create 3d visuals of a site, which is going to take over 10 years to complete, so they have requested i do a number of images showing the phases of the project, not particularly to a high standard of detail, but i am also going to create some more interesting visuals for them from ground level, and they also as yet do not have a identity for the project so i hope to talk them in to letting me develop that for them also, with regards to visual and web identity.,...

In that case, dont be shy. Ive got plenty of experience and the first thing i would ask for off the client is ALL available data. They could surprise you with the amount of stuff they have which will be usefull, but they dont realise. For example, if they've had a professional survey of the site done, chances are it holds all the 3d data. If they have a max file, why model it all again? You command the same fee regardless, if the info is there take advantage of it.
