mentalray?? vray? its the same?

Hi again.

Sorry for my ignorance. but what is mental ray.? is it better than radiosity? I have never ever seen so far a tutorial for mental ray in autodesk viz 2005, why? anynoe uses it? or not?... If so ... where can I find any tutorial for mental ray viz 2005?? thanks.

mental ray and Vray are both render engines that work with Max and Viz. They are not the same - the have a lot of the same features but work differently. I'm pretty sure Viz 2005 does come with some mental ray tutorials (they are not very complete) in the rendering section of the tutorials files. mental ray can do some really incredible stuff, but it's pretty hard to learn.

 

Radiosity is a lighting system that works with the default scanline renderer but not with mental ray or Vray - mental ray and Vray replace radiosity with their own lighting systems (Vray's Global Illumination and mental ray's Global Illumination and Final Gather).

Vray is also a much quicker renderer than Mental Ray. It's also a little easier to use, although it's still complex.

*it all depends in you, if you wanna learn both engines that would be better furthermore you can see its differences. we cannot say that Vray is better than Mental Ray, the outputs are quite different, its up to the users how to handle its complexity.

Mental ray does come packeged with Viz, so if you are on a tight budget, stick with Mental ray. It's a damn good renderer, as is Vray, but I find vray renders a little faster.
