pailhead
Omg, BOXX is so expensive i'd never get one. I think that, for the same amount of money, you may very well configure two machine like this if you would do it yourself. First of all, you don't really need a quadrofx for a rendering machine (if you only plan on rendering), you don't even need a video card for that matter. I don't really see the point in getting a single 2xx processor, since its more expensive than the same 1xx processor which is intended for single cpu usage anyway. For this amount of money you can either configure a killer of a workstation (more powerful than this boxx you've posted), or at least two good rendering slaves. DAN212222
cheers for the advice as i say i dont know much about the technical side of computers, workstations... im basically going to run c4d and probably the adobe premiere suite from the same system if possible allowing me to create 3d images / anaimations and also do print and web based work? does this sound feasible? cheers dan
bokkins
yep. its too much for now. get something around $1500 - maybe a dual core. with 2gb ram. something you can compare with the latest apple intel system which sells at $1299. good luck! pailhead
For the original price, think in the lines ofa Tyan thunder k8we 4x1gb ddr registerec ecc ram dual opterons 265 or 270 even, (2 times dualcore) two wd raptors Pretty much any newer video card would do. Check for prices of something along these lines.
Hazdaz
The ONLY reason to ever get a single CPU on a dual-processor capable system is that in the future you can speed up your comptuer dramatically by buying another CPU, but honestly I didn't notice if that system even has a dual processor motherboard. . Also, I have to comment on your choice of videocard. The DELL (ugh!) at my last job had a Quadro FX500 and it was quite the craptacular card. It was simply out-classed for the amount of money they were asking for it. I can't imagine the FX540 in this system is much better. I have totaly lost faith in "pro" level cards. I am looking for a new videocard also, and I am pretty sure I am going to go the high-end gaming card route.
pailhead
It doesn't even have to be a high-end gaming card, since your 3d application wont use a single advantage an expensive gaming card has to offer.
Hazdaz
It doesn't even have to be a high-end gaming card, since your 3d application wont use a single advantage an expensive gaming card has to offer. True that. . I actually find it a total joke too. Every announcement of the latest videocard always has these amazing 3D graphics rendered in realtime, yet no 3D appliation that I know of can actually produce these kind of graphics while you are actually working on the model. qwerty
it's true that's a bit steep for that kinda specs... but what i've realised (comparing price market here) is that it's much cheaper for you to actually upgrade ur chip to a dual core instead.. that's a catch... otherwise, pricing sounds steep for an average config graphic card... if you r using video apps, a good graphic card is handy for real-time effects and so.... if you r getting the fx 540, consider getting 1 with break-out box fro video convenience... AJLynn
Get something in a normal PC with an AthlonX2 and at least a Geforce 6800 series, with a good warranty - the Quadro FX540 isn't worth Quadro money, the single-core Opteron isn't worth Opteron money. The only good reason to go Opteron is if you want dual-dual. For example, a local vendor I like back home has this, which would run circles around that Boxx at almost $400 less: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ 2.2GHz 2x512KB Dual-Core HyperTransport ASUS A8N-E - mainboard - ATX - nForce4 Ultra 2 x Crucial 1GB PC3200 400MHz DDR eVGA nVidia 7800GT 256MB DDR3 PCI-Express ( 2xDVI ) CoolerMaster Centurion 5 ATX Antec TruePower 2.0 TPII-480 - power supply - 480 Watt 1.44Mb 3.5" Floppy Drive BLK Sony 16x IDE DVD-ROM BLK Sony 16x DVD+/-RW D-Layer BLK Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 - hard drive - 300 GB - SATA-150 Altec Lansing SERIES100 Powered Audio 120I - PC multimedia speakers Microsoft Basic Black Value Pack keyboard , mouse Microsoft Windows XP Professional w/SP2 - license and media Software Bundle, including McAfee VirusScan 2006, Quicken 2005 and OpenOffice Warranty 1 Year Parts and LIFETIME Labor Warranty Price $ 1807.00 Spend the rest of the budget on a good monitor. DAN212222
cheers guys... so would that above computer be good enough for what im after... ive just copied and pasted it and sent it to a local retailer see what he comes back with.... cheers dan
AJLynn
If I had to do it now and had the budget, I'd get something like that, but if it didn't come with Quicken or the speakers it would be no great loss, and of course I'd want my favorite keyboard and a good mouse. One of the things I like about that vendor is they give you the manufacturer and model number of each part and have several of each to choose from. It's also good if the sales people know what they're talking about (so you can ask them questions like "if I add 2 more hard drives to this box I already have, will I need a new power supply?" and they have a service department that's located in the same city as you. National onsite service like Dell is nice, but when they screw up and send the wrong part to the guy who is not the same guy who diagnosed the problem, and you need to wait another day or two, it's very frustrating. Ask around and see if there's a shop like that where you are.
