Imports from CAD

If you are trying to extrude off of the exact object as it was imported you have to make sure that the imported shape is a closed line, not open. If it was an open line you will not extrude a solid shape, it will just be the outline from the unclosed shape.

To get more specific you'd have to tell us what programs you are using.

First thing you want to do is make sure that your walls are closed poly-lines within CAD.

Second, export them as .3ds files out of CAD and make sure you have auto-welding selected.

Thirdly, import your geometry into MAX and immediately right click and select convert (the object) to Editable-Poly, select face as your sub-object, and click inside of the boundary of your wall. It should high-light red and now you are ready to extrude.

I would recommend getting acquainted with all of the functionality of the sub-object commands within Editable-Poly. It is extremely fast, flexible and easy to use. Check out the Bridge feature which lets you link faces as a single sub-object. You will never go back to Edit-Mesh for geometric modeling tasks!

Best luck, I hope this is helpful...

(using Cad2000 and Max 5) Almost helps...I am still getting pretty much the same results...I tried converting the object to a block in Cad to make sure everything was indeed connected and then importing like you said as a .3ds file...still just getting the outline though...in addition the editable poly doesn't have an option for selecting the face...just the editable mesh. When trying to select the face..it selects the edges??

Claudia

have you Tried To extrude the autocad polylines 1st

This will convert Them into 3d solids, Then you can apply

The Textures in max

i dont Think That autocad "blocks" will accept materials

(not in my experience at least so far)

i use autocad 3d solids and Then filelink into VIZ (not max)

but This should be approximately The same results, i Think
