Viz slow in parts

Small problem. I think.

I have a Dual Xeon 3.2 HT machine, with 2 Gig Ram, 128 ATI V card.. Works like a dream..

But when I am in Viz, it does two things that don't seem correct. First, when I call up the colour selector, and move the hue/blackness slide around, it stutters, like it can't keep up with the pointer.

This makes choosing colours quite annoying..

The second thing, and I have only really noticed this with Vray Free / Demo, is when I bring up the material editor, it takes 3 - 4 secs to load up each slot.. It doesn't seem like a long time, but when you have 15 or so slots, it is a pain.

I was really wondering if this is normal, or has anyone else experienced this sort of slow down..?

Cheers

Andy

it doesn't sound too out of place on heavy scenes, i have similar experiences too.

bare in mind that displaying the colour editor and changing / updating the colours on screen etc, along with loading up and rendering each material editor slot is entirely down to the graphics card. I don't think 128mb cards are that powerful today, you may find a difference if you were to upgrade the graphics card to something more substancial.

Hmmm...

The thing is, it does it when there is no scene or file loaded into Viz.. which is why I find it strange.

If I was trying to rotate an on screen rendered model, I could understand it, but while changing the colour selector without anything loaded, seems weird..

that does sound strange if its occuring with no scene loaded? have you checked the task manager to see how much memory viz is using when loaded up?

not sure what it will indicate but it may highlight the fact that there is an issue somewhere? other suggestions would be to check the display preferences in viz for anything that looks out of place.

has this problem always existed or is it something that started recently?

Just got the machine off ebay a few weeks ago.

Re formatted it all, and loaded on all my required programs..

So fairly recent machine really.. I will check it out to see if there are any settings etc.. that stand out, but should all be fairly standard.

Possibly check the Preferences / display drivers.. see what that is at. Have an ATI card, so need to check what the settings are.

in the render settings dialog under the assign renderer roll out, unlock the material editor option and change it to "Default Scanline".

see if that helps...

you should definitely look into a better graphics card as most of the viewport performance heavily relies on this. also make sure you are running viz in d3d mode instead of software.

the reason the material editor is slow is likely due to vray being set as your rendering option. changing the above should help with that because each sample in the mat editor is actually rendered and not computed real-time.

This is actually regular. If I'm undestaning what's happening, when you change the color in the color selector for a given material, as you drag the pointer, it lags a bit. The reason is because the color change is taking effect in the material slot. If you have an effect such as reflection or a mix or something else, it will take even longer for the color change to keep up with the slider. So, not only is the color swatch on the color selector trying to keep up with you moving the slider, but the color change appearence on the actual material slot is updating as you move the slider.
