antonio_frias
I am currently attempting to render a scene with the radiosity feature included in the default scanline renderer in max. I am using a model I file linked from autocad. The problem I'm finding with radiosity (using a daylight system) is that the meshes in my model are visible, they look like shadows. Am I missing something? Is there a setting I should change or is it a problem with my model from autocad?

antonio_frias
Here is a small sample of my mesh problem.
kdavenport
The issue is the smoothing groups on your model. 3dsmax has a difficult time determining how to smooth an imported AutoCAD file. You can solve this issue by adding the Smooth modifier to your model and checkboxing "Autosmooth". This will go through and assign smoothing groups to the faces just like 3dsmax does when it creates geometry.
antonio_frias
Thanks Kevin, I just finished applying a smooth modifier to my model and it solved the problem. Yesterday, I tried pumping up the filtering in the radiosity parameters and it also worked, but the rendering took much longer. The smooth modifier is som much easier to use and the model is displayed just like a model created in max. Once again thanks for the tip!
kdavenport
Glad to help. Just get used to tossing that modifier on anything your brinf in from ACAD
sob80sup81
Hi Antonio... I found the problem of those meshes too when i used raytrace (since now i'm using vray i never experienced those problems no more) The problem usually happen if you do a boolean modifier on the object i guess... well, i tried not to model using boolean, i tried to generate a model by using splines, just convert those curves into splines and attach with a spline similar to the subtraction object usually used in the boolean, and then extrude it... That way i didn't get the funny mesh problem, hope it helps mate
