Ernest Burden III
Egads! Our leader is a newbie!...there is no doubt in my mind you have done a lot more with M~R than moi. Leader? To be honest--I've done about three tests with MWR, a few spheres and a sun or an emmitter. That's it. The last render I did with it was in the summer. Hope alone has sustained me... Hey, your history thread is very interesting – love the intrigue/speculation! Not that it matters a crumb in the sea...but it was fun doing a little internet detective work. It was certainly more fun than fighting with my friends on the NL forum. It would be 'wet your pants' funny to see Victor cursing in Spanish in his office after reading that a lowly user had discovered the true origins of Maxwell. He wants us to believe in the virgin birth, but what if it was just someone's school project that he bought. Fantasy, of course. I doubt I'm right. It's just a fun diversion. kunstraum.tv
oh, i found this thread to late.... and i´m sorry to hear what happened in th MW forum. but unfortunately i´m not suprised. it´s one of the worst i´ve ever seen. i stopped to post there quite a while ago. so i can understand Fran very well. The behavior and policy of NL and many users there is nothing i want to support. I also was blinded by the hype in the beginning...but more and more it turns out that it´s just a bubble. Bongo51
I take exception to being ordered to not talk about something on a forum. I just read a post over at M~R forum telling everyone that we were not allowed to talk about people being banned. That's downright crazy for a supposed forum of professionals. I for one will be hanging out here from now on.... people I haven't seen in a while! nice. I made my comments about how if someone follows the basic rules of decorum and has a legitimate issue to discuss there shouldn't be fear of being banned!? It's censorship and unacceptable. I wondered where you were off to Fran... and Ernest! man I had no idea it had gotten so orwellian over there. Iandavis

Ernest Burden III
... perhaps the makings of a star trek episode. Actually, there is a Star Trek episode with a child god run amok. I didn't refer to it directly since I didn't think anyone else had as mis-spent a youth as mine. And there's a NY joke that the lions sitting outside the main Library on 42nd St. roar every time a Virginian walks by. No, wait, that not quite it. Bongo51
yes. it can get worse. the TOM god child has been locking threads that even mention the IDEA of banning people. Apparently now there are topics that are verbotten. Do not even think about it... or you will be locked out. Rational and intelligent artists are abandoning that forum like a sinking ship! I just told Tom what I thought of his 'crackdown' and I'm not going back there for a long time. Running a forum like your own personal ideology is unbelievable! What exactly do they expect to accomplish by alienating everyone with any sense of justice? sorry... venting. Ian.

AdamT
Well, they've certainly cleared the block of the sharpest knives. Here are some of the inciteful comments about the new announcement: " Cant wait!!! xmas in april impressive stuff- great stuff Tom and the rest of the A team, keep it up, its rockin fricken A, look at those clipmaps! and the caustics images are beautiful OMFG! DROOL! Oh man do I wanna play with MW 1.0" You'd almost think that something *new* had been announced. There were a few comments inquiring about render times. Referring to the render time of one of the dispersion pics, Tom said: "hyltom: Long enough but it worths, isn't it... " A: It only worths if you can complete the render by your deadline. Asked if they would include render times and configs with future renders, Tom said: "Hi acquiesse, I've previously explained this: Tom wrote: Depends on your configuration, sorry we didn't took notes for most of artistic images, if they are not for benchmark. Best regards, Tom" IOW, "no, we're not going to tell you what the render times were." Soooo ... am I starting to sound like a bitter angry man yet? What exactly do they expect to accomplish by alienating everyone with any sense of justice? sorry... venting. Ian. Its probably Victor who's giving orders to do all of the censorship and banning, and i immagine he's giving green light to all of the moderators to eliminate anyone who creates any problems, so they can freely settle the score with whoever they want. They probably know that while the 1.0 release will be really feature heavy, it will still be slow, noisy, and have the sme limitations as the beta. Having probably lost alot of sales due to the long release times and all of the complaining on the internet about them, made a decision to maximise the marketing hype and eliminate all critical voices in an attempt to save the saveable at this point. I really think the mods are doing this under orders, because by now they know very well that everytime they censor or lock or ban something, it ends up in other forums and does alot of damage to NLs reputation. I guess its an 'all or nothing' strategy. We'll see... Amazing how power corrupts!

Bongo51
popart, you are most likely correct. I wrote victor and he didn't bother responding... though Tom responded instantly. I told him I'm not staying in any forum where thought police is the norm, and being told what is and is not an important issue to discuss. Apparently this is being aggressive and angry. I explained that I was leaving for exactly that reason... not to allow myself to go on a rampage and get banned for my efforts. So I posted a goodbye notice, which of course was instantly deleted. Tom then responded: (bolding added) Yes, our forum is simple and mechanic, we don't want discussions here. You can talk about 2 things on the forum 1- Maxwell Render Technical Issues 2- About everything but rules/personnel and moderation etc. If it makes you unhappy not being able to discuss our politics on our forum, so do us. Best regards, Tom Now, this is new. A forum that is an enforced tech discussion group? Fair enough, it's their server. I think you are right they are clearing the intelligent and vocal people out of the forum at all costs. They want to bury their blunders so deep that nobody will ever know that the product was almost 2 years behind schedule and a great number of the 'light simulators' promised features are simply missing. Oh, and SINCE WHEN is it their forum? The forum is composed of USERS who all gave Next Limit their money. The sole purpose of the forum's very existence is for the user. The moderators are there to keep people from using the F word and beating up on the shy artists. NOT to enforce Next Limits political or ideological stances. If they wanted to have a puppet forum perhaps they could populate it only with their employees. (which may be the end result of this nonesense) As for taking a stand. YES. Done that. UPDATE: they have deleted my innocent goodbye notice. Apparently, nobody can know if a member leaves.. that's too inflammatory.
Sawyer
But what does taking a stand mean? In my mind it would be boycotting he final product regardless of it's merits. Don't use it or even dl it. Aside from that what are the options?
Bongo51
sawyer, in my mind that wouldn't be effective... nobody is going to throw away so much money based on a crappy forum. No, I'm thinking something more realistic, like spreading the word. The maxwell forum has become the textbook definition of a censured corporate run hand puppet. People considering the product should be aware that Next Limit is capable of that kind of tactic. Other then that... I'm drawing a blank.

"So do us?" What the hell does that mean? [sigh] Its hard to believe that NL wants this to be their voice on the internet. Kindof surreal. Oh well, i agree, NL has always profitted from a great user base (think of all the great images they always took off of the gallery section to use as free publicity every day), and instead of ever saying 'thank you for all of the artists you believed in maxwell and contributed to its success,' this happens. It is really disgusting, sorry to use strong language. Maybe a good 1.0 release will at least calm the flames, but i think that if NL was sure of that they wouldnt be acting in this way. Where theres smoke there is fire, and that has always applied to Next Limit
Sawyer
See I agree that no one is going to throw away their purchase but it also means that NL can get away with it. It seems to me that if people don't "vote with their checkbook" their is no other way to protest that will affect NL. I guess it should be identified if its a usable program with a crappy forum or a crappy program with a crappy forum.
