Importing BIM

I know this is a common problem but I would like to revisit this issue just to make certain I am going about this the right way. I have a client who is using ADT to model the site. I bring this in and I have the horrible boolean triangles that render really poorly and make adjusting the model really hard. I have also found that I cannot use vray displacement on these faces - they just don't displace right. Now I have been redoing all of the modeling in max so I have a clean model but is this my only option? Is there nothing I can do to be able to use the BIM model? I have tried importing and file linking and no difference.

Thanks

yeah, that is the same article i was linking to.

looking at you image, the triangulation that occurs is exactley the same as the triangualtion that occurs when importing 3D AutoCAD models (which is how i model). i don't find any issues with it in respect of rendering via VRay tho. Only problem is during displacement but this can be mended by using the subdivide modifier 1st (or mesh smooth with 0 iterations, i've seen mentioned somewhere) until the layout of triangles is more suitable.

I recently imported a huge ADT file into LightWave and had the same issues. I make the surfaces double sided but thats only half the problem.

Trying to adjust the model with something simple like Knife was just about impossible as I was cutting 26000 triangular polygons instead of less than 200 squares had it been modelled by me.

I kept telling myself it was better than modelling from scratch but after two days I was pulling my hair out and wishing I had re-done it.
