I usually just grab a new material on the Material/Map Browser and place it over a material in the material slot! It will not replace the material it will just give you another material to work with! Thats just my quick way there may be other ideas! but if you need that material back just click in the same slot and use the eyedropper to place it back into the material slot!

hope this helped!

what version of Max are you using?

v8 has an unlimited # of mats available!

... there is a tutorial floating out there somewhere that directly addresses this although I can't find it right now... anyone have it bookmarked?

from the 3ds max reference html:

Important: While the Material Editor can edit no more than 24 materials at a time, a scene can contain an unlimited number of materials. When you are through editing one material, and have applied it to objects in the scene, you can use that sample slot to get a different material from the scene (or create a new one) and then edit it.
