Hi, I'm in the process right now of trying to get a studio up and running. I have a BFA from Ai in visual effects and im currently in school for architecture, I really want to get this bussines going. I have a few guys that are amped up to help me out and work for me and have started thinking of some marketing ideas to get some bussines in. I was wondering if some of you guys could give me some advice on this. I know it's going to be a learning process for me but I want to get a heads up on what to expect. Thanks

I certainly don't want to discourge you, but how serious are you about architecture school. I really don't see how you can do both at the same time. The time demand for architecture school is incredible. Its hard enough trying to find time to sleep, let alone run a business. I would honestly question which one is more important to you.

Now onto your question.

In order to get clients you will need to show your work to various architects and developers in your area. They can make the decision on weather or not they want to hire you for free lance work. But until you are well established, I don't see there being enough work to keep you and your employees busy.

Good Luck

Run! far and fast, away from both and don't look back!

It sounds like you are more bit by the 3D bug than really have it together for a full blown business.

If you are really on the architecture path and want to become a licensed Architect, stay focused on only that for college and build up your CG portfolio from that aspect.

If you want to be a VFX star, drop out of college starve for a few years and build up an incredible demo reel.

If you are just looking at this as a money machine, you are soarly mistaken and should go get an MBA. That's were the $$ is at and not in the trenches.

You might post some of you work for CC and see what the response is. No one will burn you here on anything like that.

Good luck which ever way you go.

You guys may laugh at this but..........

I'm thinking about opening a laundrette !!

If I can successfully start this up sometime next year, then I can go back to university and complete my architectural qualifications from where I left off.

For me there's less of a risk (depending on location) with a laundrette as people are always gona need clean clouths! I might also add a small cafe/seating space and provide a collect & return service which none of the laudrettes offer near me! You only need one employee and all the machines are coin fed. EASY MONEY !!!

Regards,

Thanks for your comments.I came up with this whole thing because I mean i figured well i know how to do this and im going to know people who would have a need for it so why not try to make something out of it. The salary for an architect is not nearly enough for what i want to make and ive spoken to some of my proffesors about their income and they agree that i should definetly make some money on the side with something. I love and have a passion for designing and creating but I've always been extremely ambitious with money so in part it is a big reason why i want to get this going. I've always seen myself as a business owner and have found an opportuniy to make things happen. I could'nt agree more about either choosing school or running a business , i see school as a more stable and sure way to go than starting a studio but i honestly feel that i have a good mind for business and would love to take a risk and go out on this venture. For now i'll try to blance the two and decide what i'll do in the future. Miami's great for this industry though, there's so many projects going on now and so many developers and architects and realtors that I feel that if I market right I'm sure im bound to getting something done. Thanks again.
