wizuby
This seems like a common problem...but I cannot seem to find a decent answer that fixes my problem. I am having random red dots show up in my renderings. The dialog box says, "warning:material returned overbright or invalid color." I had my irradecence map set on preset low, and also tried medium and hi but I still got the dots. Oddly, when I hide everything else in the scene except one of the problem objects it renders fine, but when i turn everything else on again the red dots come back. Some camera angles they show up...others they dont. Any hints on whats going on?
Christopher Nichols
First off what version of Vray are you using? Next make sure you are not using any 3ds raytraced materials or maps.
wizuby
i am using the latest full version of Vray, and I think all my materials are Vray materials only. I will have to make sure there are no raytraced maps anywhere. Another thing i noticed is that when i turn off my photometric sun and just use the vray sky light...the red dots are gone. Of course the rendering doesn't look as good either.
Christopher Nichols
Those red dots are usually a sign of unsupported materials, or things like rpc's. I personnally don't like the photometric sun thing... I am not sure about how compatible it is with Vray to be honest. I am more of a vray light and hdri man myself. BrianKitts
quick fix is to just go into your raytracing panel and flick off the four check boxes to turn off raytracing. if any materials render improperly then you will know right away which ones to fix. (make use of vray maps, they're a wonderful thing).... Most of the time when I do this I don't even see a difference other than the splotches go away. wizuby
Im not sure I understand your method. I just turned off the raytracing tabs and rendered again. The red dots were still there...what now? I don't understand your next step.
wizuby
Is there a problem with using bitmaps instead of Vray maps?
manta
This might sound strange, but ungroup everything, had the same problem once, after I ungrouped, problem went away...give it a try
owen072080
I've experience that problem too especially when i use rpc's. Even though i delete the rpc's it still produces red spots. What i do is that i save my mesh together with my cameras and lights as a new file. It works fine for me in the end. I hope this helps a bit. wizuby
man...i was really hoping that would work, but no luck. I am really going crazy here...i can't seem to find anything that would be causing this. All i know is when i turn off my sun...its fine, but the lighting is crappy. manta
Try using a vray light instead...
Christopher Nichols
Are you sure there is nothing in your scene that has 3d studio raytracing (not vray raytracing)... this could be raytrace material raytrace map architectural material raytrace shadows (as opposed to vray shadows)
neba77
There are a few threads on chaosgroup forums that deal with these problems. One of the many things that could produce these kinds of red spots are 90` rotated gradient ramp maps. Sound crazy but i had the exact problem from the mentioned reason. Tim Saunders
I forgot where I saw it, but there was something mentioned somewhere about using camera correction with vray occasionally causing this problem. I think it was unchecking "MAX-compatible ShadeContext (work in camera space)" in the VRay: System rollout panel.

id_ivan
I found out that the way i modelled geometry might also causing the same problem. I mixed the box objects (rectangle with extrude modifier) together with one sided object (the way i used to modelling with radiosity renderer) and the result slap me in my face. I tried to cap my geometry and it didnt work either. I finally re-modelled them then the red dots dissapear.
