Applying maps to multiple faces

I'm a newbie at materials in Max, so don't be astonished if my question seems unreal.

I just created a 3d model of a hedge with a couple hundred planes and applied a mesh modifier. I have a bitmap of a leaf and I created an alpha channel. How do I apply the leaf bitmap on the planes (faces after I applied the mesh modifier) and only see my leafs when I render my hedge?
