Notorious
Hi all, does anyone know a good resource to learning V-Ray, unfortunatly I've become a slave to FR so will need some good guides to learn from scratch.....man, this will fry my brain!! Any sugestions would be most appreciated! Rob
Brian Cassil
Christopher Nichols has made a couple of DVD's that are very popular. You can even find him trolling the forums here quite a bit. I haven't seen them myself though. As a fellow FR user I'm curious to know why you've decided to switch? You know SP3 is due out any minute now and it has many substiantial enhancments. Notorious
Brian, Yes I'm aware of the the FR sp3 release, about time as well! Final render has allowed me to complete many commercial jobs and has been a productive tool for me since stage-0. However I have become reliant on this one piece of software. By the looks of things Vray also has a lot to offer, mainly it's speed. I think it's time I delved into vray, learnt how to use it and see if i could benefit. SP3, however, looks like it will offer a lot and I really hope it delivers! Thanks for the info on Christopher Nichols I'm having a look now. Cheers Rob

Jim Mann
Hi all, does anyone know a good resource to learning V-Ray, unfortunatly I've become a slave to FR so will need some good guides to learn from scratch.....man, this will fry my brain!! Any sugestions would be most appreciated! Rob Christopher Nichols DVD's without a doubt are superb. I had been using Vray on and off for about 18 months, so some of the info was a bit basic for me but the extra 10-20% that I got from actually finding out what the various settings actually do has been invaluable. Images are faster and better now. The Vray help and tutorial files are also really helpful but I think that you might have to have a customer login to find those. My recommendation would be Chris Nichols DVD 1 followed by the Vray files and then if you have managed not to fry your brain by then to try CN's DVD 2. Notorious
Thanks all, Depends how I get on with FR service pack 3 but I'll definatly have a look at the V-ray DVD's. By the way, the work on the Aversis site is great but it sure has some anoying pop-ups on it!. Doea anyone know if V-ray and FR can coexist? could I boot max with the choice of renderer? Thanks again BOB
Ricardo Eloy
You can always choose which renderer you are going to use. You can either create a Default (see Custom UI and Defaults Switcher) or simply change it under "Assign Renderer".
Tim Saunders
www.vray.info is also a good place to get started. Good luck.
acs
Hi everyone, I've been using Vray Demo with Max 8 for only a couple of hours but Vray seems to forget my render settings and returns to defult settings. Is this because it is only a demo or am I missing something? Thanks Al.
RobMc
acs - same thing happened to me, but I've just purchased a license and it now remembers my settings. Guess it's just a feature of the 'demo' version.

Guess it's just a feature of the 'demo' version. Yeap... that is how it works... The VrayFree has limited features but saves the settings and will render without a watermark. The VrayDemo will not save the settings (in fact it will even reset the settings every time it autosaves) and will have a watermark. I think their logic (which seems logical) is that they will give you Vray free to use, but if you want to try out all the vfancy features of the full version, you can. You just can't save it. Sergio
Hi all, I downloaded 3dpalace tutorials, not too bad, only one remark-they are quite old if I am not mistaken version 1.09. Christophers DVD are nice, but one thing whitch is lacking is good tutorial in house exterior tutorial. I got Vray for few months now, and still struggle, very often I got so bad renderings, so I have to quickly, because of the deadline revert from Vray to scanline renderings. My renderings are ocasionally goin so bad, and let me think that it was bad investment. Support is very low, unfortunately very few are real masters in exteriors, talking in hyper realistic renderings, and that people don't have enough time to help us newbies. I even invested lots of bucks in educaton, HDRi dvd's and still nothing. I am willing to pay if someone can come with some good tutorial and explanation the way of thinking in Vray exterior architectal rendering. Very frustrating... kippu
sergio ... there has been absolutely wonderful exteriors done in vray but the settings are not going to come out in a tutorial. ..... for most simple of settings ... try a direct light and environment and linear color mapping ... now try a scene , play with values and keep posting so that you can be guided along .... and vray support is one of the best
