Jeff Mottle
Here it it, the long awaited and much anticipated salary survey. To ensure the integrity of the results, I will not be releasing them until we get at LEAST 2000 respondants. I will update this thread from time to time with the current count. Be sure to pass this along to everyone in your firm and all of your collegues in the industry. http://www.cgarchitect.com/news/newsfeed.asp?nid=3111 Total Respondants to date: 2924 (2147 completed 100%) (Updated April 11, 2006)

John Dollus
For question 3, what is considered a major city? BTW, I will be passing this along to lots of people I know! Any way to check the count on respondents?
Jeff Mottle
For question 3, what is considered a major city? BTW, I will be passing this along to lots of people I know! Any way to check the count on respondents? Well when I put this question in I contemplated putting a number, like 1 million, but then I got thinking, how big is a major city. I left it up to people's discression as to what they consider a major city. I'm not putting a lot of weight on this question, so I'm really not too concerned. A major city in China for example might be significantly bigger than one in Nebraska. It's all relative.
Devin Johnston
Jeff I just wanted to thank you for putting this together and doing such a great job with it. I've posted a link over at the Maxwell forum so hopefully we will reach that magic number of 2000 by the end of this weekend! Just curious but are you going to publish the info as soon as you reach 2000 and just update the survey results as more people vote?

Just curious but are you going to publish the info as soon as you reach 2000 and just update the survey results as more people vote? Thanks. 2000 is a number I estimated would be a good sample to ensure I cover as many of the world's professionals as possible. I need 2000 surveys that are 100% complete (not all people finish the survey for some reason). Once I get 2000 I'll review the results and see if that gives me a good sample. If it does, it will likely take me a week to analyze and compile the results and put together a PDF report. As of this post we are only about 45% of the way there, so I need as many people to get this around as possible. It definetly will not be released before we hit 2000. If there are local groups, website that deal with CG or Arch CG, please post this survey so as many people see it as possible, I won't be allowing it to run indefinetly as it costs me money for each collected survey becuase I am using a survey service company. Between the salary survey and industry survey it will cost about $200-300, so I want to limit my expense at some point.

Jeff Mottle
Hi Jeff, Thanks for taking the time to put together the survey - I'm interested in seeing the results. Any chance you are going to have the results broken down into geographic region? Like you, I am based out of Western Canada, and despite there being a high demand for our services, I have found that I have had to keep my rates the same for about the past ten years as many of the newcomers to the field have totally devalued the market. With the cost of hardware and software becoming increasingly costly, I often find myself working 70+ hour weeks just trying to make ends meet. Quite frustrating to say the least. __________________ Jason Lowe www.jlvisuals.com Depending upon the number of responses in a particular region will depend upon how granular the results I post. At the very least I will be posting results from countries with a significant number of responses. I will be breaking down the US at the very least into regions, states as applicable. For Canada I will break down by province where I have a suitable number of responses. Otherwise it might be based on the country as a whole. I will not know until I receive at least 2000 responses. JamesTaylor
As a few have already Jeff, I'd also like to thank you for putting this together, (and for all the other work that we as a community benefit from) i think it will be turn out to be very interesting for everyone here when the results are posted. you mentioned breaking down America and Canada, can i also suggest that for the UK you may want to break it down in to London, The south and The North as i think that there is most likely quite a difference between these regions particularly London and the rest. Many Thanks James

Unfourtunately, I did not prompt for a location breakdown in any countries other than the US or Canada. It will have to wait for the next salary survey. Devin Johnston
Jeff, I've noticed that CGA has something close to 14,000 members but only 2,500 of them are active. How many people visit the site on a daily basis?
JamesTaylor
no problem jeff, i'm sure the information gathered wil give us a good indication either way and we can probably use a quick estimated difference to offset from the average anyway. if there is to be further surveys in future i'm sure the info and questions will evolve, but at the moment any info is more than is currently available! How many people visit the site on a daily basis? The forums have 2,500 active members, but the site as a whole get's around 2000-6000 unique visitors a day. Many people come to our forums and no the main site and vice versa. To be considered an active member you have to have visited the board in the last 40 days. mrmilano
Hello Jeff, and all... Will the survey take into consideration salaries perceived in different countries? A 3D viz artist is more likely to make much more money in the USA than in Latin America or other countries.. I will post the survey at www.Arquinauta.com A community of architects, student architects, and 3D Visualization entusiasts. Thank you,
Jeff Mottle
Will the survey take into consideration salaries perceived in different countries? Everyone who takes the survey is asked to convert their salary to US dollars so there is a consistant currency. When the survey is released it will list the salaries in USD. To see how your salary compares you just need to convert the USD amount to your own currency.

Ernest Burden III
Jeff Since you're paying the company doing the survey, I'm going to point this out so you can nag 'em. Their site requires cookies enabled. It puts up a page saying so, and then has instructions on how to do it. Except they only have IE and Netscape. No Firefox. I'll follow the survey link from IE to save myself the trouble (I only us IE for things like this) but they should add the Firefox instructions to that redirect page.
