Great question...not sure I have any answers. I do think that the two are greatly related. Many similar concepts, intensity, motion, feel.

I'm not sure what my favorite style of music or architecture is anymore. The older I get, the less of a snob I am in regards to different styles.

I used to study Jazz and I was still into it big time when I went back to school.

Ironically I liked Jazz for music but the design and style of the Bauhaus era....very contradictory in my opinion.

What would a complimentary architecture be to Metal?.....demolition?:p

Back to my college days i always heard about that...music being related to architecture. i don't remember the name of a famous architect who said that architecture was "frozen music". on the other hand, i read an essay that stated that the art most related to architecture was Filmmaking, not music (he talked about tarkovsky films specifically). I agree with this, though i always think of a gothic cathedral when i listen to music by, say, Enigma. :)

just a vision.

You shoukd look at the Stretto house by Steven Holl. He says the form of the house was made based on a piece of music by Bartok.

To be honest i think the connection in this case is fairly tenuous but generally i think the creative processes are reasonably similar, especially in early stages of architectural design.

Hope it helps.

I appreciate all styles of architecture and music but lean more towards modern architecture while listening to classic.

My personal opinion on this questions is that they unrelated in the process but both end up being art, therefore the same.

1) I like "less is more" architecture, but not as far as minimalist. Intelligent choice of materials, (timbers, glass + concrete) and a great appreciation of light in a space will win over fancy-shmancy architectural design any day of the week in my opinion.

2) I dont like R+B or hiphop, but other than that I listen to most types of music. Right now im enjoying coldplay and the occasional cheesy 80's hit.

Do i think there is a connection between personal taste in music and architecture? Very little if any. I do think a cultural link/relationship exists but it is perhaps a bit bigger than just an architects personal taste in music.

re: the connection between music and architecture...

check out this link:

It's the same link that was referenced today on the front pagge of the site....

Scroll down and read the article titled "ipod Culture - Perception of Urban Space". It makes for interesting reading (and viewing)... It's about our differing perception of spaces depending on what we've got playing n our ipods...

Hi everyone

thanx a lot for posts , and I'm still waiting for more opinions ..

I think there is a connection too . but I think the connection is differ from person to another , cause it depend on the personality .!

anyway there is another stream to go with , which is the comparing between these two :

- the act of looking at a building

- the act of listening to a track of music

"mostly" everytime we feel something's new !
