There is always an issue of possible dead pixels. Also, manufacturers don't rate response time to any standard.

They can use different techniques for measuring response time which are incredibly misleading to the consumer. ie a 2ms response time might actually be a 16ms response time when measured through a different methology.

Viewsonic recently got slapped for doing this.

You also need to be wary about whether or not its a 16.7 (8-bit) million color display, or 16.2. (6-bit) There is a MASSIVE difference between them. The 16.2's look pretty crappy by comparison (I'm sitting next to one right now). The colors look washed out, like someone screwed up the contrast/brightness sliders. Many manufacturers use the 16.2 m displays because its easier to get a lower response time then with the higher color depth models.

Because there is no vesa standard for any LCD spec's manufacturers can use the best methods to overinflate their actual screen performance. ie The number's you show you aren't what you get...its just inflated scores to make you think one model is better then another.

My current favorite monitor is the Dell 1905FP which is no longer in production. Its counterpart (same display but without usb ports) is the Samsung 940t. (8 bit display, 1000:1 contrast ratio [closer to 800:1]), 20 ms response time.

I will agree with this. We have a bunch of 1905FP's here and they are very nice indeed and respond well to calibration. Imagine my surprise when I ordered four new ones a couple of weeks ago, only to find that the same model (Ultrasharp 19" LCD monitor) is now a crappy 6-bit model. Those things went back as fast as I could package them up again, and I'm now looking for replacements (will look at the Samsung, thanks for the tip).

mosh,

Aye...the 1907FP is a pretty cruddy monitor compared to the 1905FP...the forums were very upset when the 1905FP disappeared :(. Newegg has the 940t for 306 USD though right now. Just ordered a few for work.

Whoops, they raised the price...everybody must be buying it now that the 1905FP isn't avail.

Here's a snapshot for you.

Bezel is actually thinner then the 1905FP, similar base design, same core display. I think the blacks on the samsung look ever so slightly darker, but that could be a function of its placement in the room.
