MrCAD
well I've been workin on some grass and come to a conclusion that shag hair works the fastest for making grass....all the other displacement methods work really slow for me...can anyone get it faster ? I am workin on an anim and the client needs alot of grass in the seen. Here's a test result with shag hair took 22 seconds to render Meher http://www.mr-cad.com
JamesTaylor
is the test just using scanline or a GI engine?
MrCAD
its plain old scanline..I will be animating with max radiosity.
Ricardo Eloy
I found that Hair&Fur used with radiosity can generate strange results... looking forward to seeing what your animation will look like.
JamesTaylor
what are the render times like when using Radiosity with it, or have you excluded it from the rad calc? i have found vray fur to be slow when used with GI
Ricardo Eloy
The thing is that when you have the normal Hair&Fur, it does not get affected by radiosity. In order to get it interacting with it, you have to turn it into geometry, which launches your rendertimes to the moon.
MrCAD
you are right rick...but will not be using radiosity on the grass for the final render...btw..hair&fur (max native) works differently than shag hair. Shag hair is far away faster considering render times. Meher
DennisHolland
A large anim with a couple of footballfields of lawn in it, using procedural or geometry based grass. Ever considered a plain hires grassmap with a mixmap to control the tiling? Works great.... Regards, Dennis
