Hello,

I'm new to the forums and so I hae been reading many usefuls tips on 3Ds Max. I am currently teaching myself Max, and that is going over well, however, I have version 8 at work, and I'm running version 7 at home. There is a project I'm working on that requires time at home, however may of my matlibs are on my work system. Is there a successful way of transferring these files so that I may share them? Any and all help will be appreciated!

You might have trouble transferring files from version 8 to 7. It depends on what you are using in Max 8 as far as New Features because some of them are not in an earlier version and the file will not open. In order to get the same matlibs, you could just copy your matlibs file from one and paste it into the other version. Make sure you restart Max or else they will not show up. I hope what I said is true and if not then I hope you get the right answer quickly..............JophuS

JophuS,

Thanks for the quick response! I will check to see if I used any of 8's new features. When I copied my files this weekend, it didn't even cross my mind that I should restart Max. When I did try to open the files, I recieved an error button stating; Files are corrupt or missing. I will restart Max this evening and see if that works. Again thank you for your help!

  • 2 weeks later...

3dmax generally hasn't been backwards compitable in previous versions so you won't be able to open a version 8 .max file in version 7.

like Mostafa says if you save out to .3ds it should be alright, but i hate what it does to your file.........presuming it still groups everything and uses sub objects mats
