xrefs

Hey all,

For the first time I'm using Xref's in Viz....I know the basic theory behind them by using f1, but need some understanding....I have a house in a scene that I am xrefing in. If I erase an object in that house (say, a piece of trim) in the source file, I always get errors saying that it can't find that certain object when I open up the destination scene. Backburner also comes up with errors because the object is missing.

Right now, I can't find a way to succusfully erase the object from the original file without having to reload the file (which would require moving, scaling and rotating many entities of the house).

Also, If I change a material color in the destination scene, then change it to a totally different color in the source scene, what should happen? I've gotten mixed results. Should the object in the destination scene always pull in information from the source scene, or does changing things in the destination scene trump all changes in the source...even after mulitple saves?

Sorry for the long quesiton. I just want to start off with x-refs neatly so I don't have to do troublesome house cleaning in the future.

I hate X-refs in Viz/max. But from my experience using them, any changes from the "source file" will be updated in the working scene as soon as you hit "update now" unless you have "automatic" updating checked. However, I have never messed with the "add as proxy" or "merge manip." options so those might make a difference as well. There are quite a few options the Xref objects window gives you that will make a diffrence in the way things are updated, but with the defalt settings, the "source" file is the master.
