edub
I'm trying to create a shader for illustrating a marble-laminated facade cladding. Basically it's a thin slab of marble laminated on a sheet of glass. It needs to be translucent, and will be the exterior cladding on a building. I'm doing a night shot, and the interior light will shine through the marble from the inside. I would like to be able to see the veining in the marble. I have managed to get a somewhat decent result (which I can post later) - just wanted to see if anyone else has any good settings to share. -e
Frosty
Post your results for crit please. I think a few strategies you will use will be... 1) SSS (ssssslow) 2) Luminance map 3)Transparency SSS is what you're really after, or at least the appearence of it. I think you will likely be able to fake it with a little transparency and a little luminance.
edub
here's a quick image to illustrate my results: I'm also uploading a test file witht he material and texture used, if anyone wants to play around with it. (v.9.52)

edub
Frosty, Initially I was ruling out SSS, although I know that this is really what I'm looking for. I simply figured it'd be too slow (like you state). Nonetheless, I decided to test it out, and I'm actually getting good results. Whether the rendertimes will suffer, I'll have wait and see. I'm also using GI, so that adds time on its own.
edub
where, in tha manual, is SSS described?? I can't find it. I'm playing around with filter length and absorbtion, but don't know what they mean.
