AJLynn
The GT is much faster. Just look at the specs - the GT has a faster core clock. And, you don't have to post multiple times - we do read the old threads with new posts, but sometimes we're busy or away from the computer. Greg Hess
Do you have evga? They have both a lifetime warranty and a stepup program.
chow choppe
whats evga? sorry m8 i am not very savvy about these things
Greg Hess
evga is the name of a company that makes nvidia cards. When in doubt, google! http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=evga http://www.evga.com
chow choppe
Thanks Greg So u mean evga is also a good company thanks
jonel
I doubt that 3dsmax can gain much from just a bit higher clock for same GPU chip/faster vRAM. It's not using that much from a VGA, like shaders and stuff, so there shouldn't be much difference. You could see a bit improvement with transparency and textures.. I had 6600GT, on agp board, switched to PCI-x, with 6600 and haven't noticed any improvement nor lower perfrormance Btw, dualcore cpu will work 100% in viewport much less than one can expect, only with oGL (not in every case), but with directX - 50% (just one core is 'working')
AJLynn
If you're using a hardware-accelerated shading mode such as OpenGL or Direct3D (and you should be using one of these), the clock speed on the video card is important. There's a big difference there between the TD and the GT, and the price difference isn't that much. And extra $30 or $40 gets you a 500MHz GPU instead of 300MHz - this is one of the better price/performance moves you can make. It's an easy call. jonel
ok, I'll run some test with ati x1600xt, with different clocks and we'll see, what i've said, can be wrong since that upgrade was about 18 months ago
jonel
here it is, FPS (higher is better ) Ati x1600XT silent, opteron 170@2700MHz
AJLynn
That's what I'm on about - compare the highest numbers (DirectX with fast clock) to second highest (DirectX with slow clock) and you've got at least $40 worth of improvement.
jonel
yup, numbers speak for themselves, thanks for 'provoking' me to run some test now, it would be nice if someone can explain what these stuff means (in practical terms): 1. blitting 2. dualplanes 3. rasterize I'll see if I can get some other cards (and free time) to make the test more interesting, a lot of people on various forums often ask about 'what VGA should I buy for 3dsmax' but very few popular benchmark sites do this particular test (mostly do cinebench shading and specviewperf). Only problem here in Belgrade is that there is impossible to find Quadro's and FireGL's :S
Greg Hess
jonel, Those are the standard 3dsmax benchmark scenes.
chow choppe
Thanks everyone though most of the technical stuff was not understood by me but still now i can buy 6600 GT thanks
