Viz rendering cpu and license questions

I'm just about to order viz 07, and have a couple questions:

-does viz (mental ray) and/or vray support dual core and dual-dual cpu configs with XP? I'm going to upgrade my system soon but don't want to spend on unused processing if these rendering engines won't utilize them.

-if I keep my current PC up and running alongside my new system, does the single personal copy of Viz allow me to use my old system to network render?

Yes. I run a 2x2 opteron 280 with xp and viz 05 and it works dandy. No changes in network rendering, just read the (F1)help files on setting up network rendering. It explains the proccess of installing viz for the render nodes. I don't think you do a full installation, or maybe you do but just don't license it on the nodes. I forget.

yes and yes....

viz 2007 is dual dual-core supported for both MR and scanline

you can use your previous machine as a MR satellite node or BB server node.

Viz 07 now has up to 8 MR satellite nodes. I'm not certain about the unlimited MR network rendering via BB. I think this is still just in Max (I’m not seeing it listed on the feature sheet anyway).

thanks for the replies, exactly what I wanted to know.

now i have to figure out whether to wait for the new amd socket f in july (at I'm sure $$$$$$ prices) or just go with a dual opteron setup now.

One quick question: does viz and other rendering software respond or work more efficiently with the operteron chipset as opposed to their FX line of chips?

Or could I be just as well served with a chip such as the FX60? I need to do a bunch of searching/reading about this, but I figured this is a good place to start.

thx!
