jpeg compression looks horrible.

Recommended Posts

i used to argue that it was nearly impossible to notice a high level of compression on jpeg. i think i am revisiting that thought. i usually save jpeg out of photoshop at a setting of 10 out of 12. they still looked good, and the file size was easy on everything.

now, since switching to an LCD monitor, the jpeg compression looks horrible on my images and textures. it wouldn't look like this on my CRT unless i saved it out at a 5 out of 12 or something like that.

....anyone else notice this?

Hi Travis,

Isn't it possible that a LCD screen recognise a lot more color ranges? In my believe the jpg compression engine cut off half your color ranges so that is the reason it looks so bad, just because the loss of colors IS recognised on a LCD and therefore it shows.

Better double-check your colorprofile if your work is printed in a high quality brochure.

I always thought the opposite, that CRT's had better color depth...

agreed. crt's do display a better colour definition, but a tft displays a finer crisper definition.

the quallity of jpg compression is identical to the eye, more or less, on both my tft's and crt's
