Well GI is Generalized term, and radiosity is a Technique, that I'm not all that sure I fully understand, but the nice thing about radiosity is that once its calculated, you can just render to you hearts desire, beacause the lighting info is now contained within the mesh itself, with other GI Techniques they are view dependent, so they must be calculated frame by frame...quote]

In that case would it not make sense to use radiosity when doing an animation of a complete house interior, go ahead and run the radiosity solution for the entire scene (all rooms in the house) at one time, and then render each frame?

Does anyone know if mental ray or vray use radiosity calcs for their GI technique?

BTW: This is a great forum!

No, vray and mentalray do not use this Technique, they actually use different methods each, yes it would make sence to use radiosity for animation, but it also has its own drawbacks, (of which I'm not familiar) but maybe someone can chime in and tell us...vray has a variety of GI solutions that can be used in different combinations, I happen to like using the irradiance map for primary light and light cache for secondary light, because both solutions can be saved and reused, saving all that time to recalculate...

Mentalray I'm not very sure, I know you can save your final gather maps, but that is the extent of my knowledge with MR...
