Devin Johnston
I've watched the video and seen the images and I'm not sure if any of this stuff is new, with the possible exception of the Emitter+basic layer. I know Tom and other A-Teamers said we were going to see some stuff this week that would blow us away, I hope this isn't it.
AdamT
Agreed, although the anisotropic material does look a lot better than the old one (which never worked really).

CHE
What a waste of time. I too hope this is not what Tom has been bragging about. The video is just hilarious... Here is the e-mail I received this morning from NL for those that didn't get it: Dear Customers, We have a new feature video and several A-Team images for you. The images you will find in the following link http://www.maxwellrender.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13974 are a demonstration of latest features and Maxwell in action. Thank you again for your priceless support and patience. We'll keep providing you with new stuff everyday, so fasten your seatbelts and enjoy! You can also check the video at http://www.maxwellrender.com Best regards, A-Team Laboratories Next Limit Team
AdamT
My seatbelt is fastened. When does the ride start?
Devin Johnston
I actually laughed at the video while it was playing because this is the 3rd or 4th video I've seen demonstrating this single feature. Tom and Mike seem to thing this is the most revolutionary thing that has ever been seen. I agree it is very impressive but not to the point where I'm going to forget about all the other things that Maxwell is supposed to do. I want to see examples of other features; I’d like to know what features Maxwell is going to have, don’t you think they should know this by now. AdamT
According to Tom the video was demonstrating something else. It being Tom, of course, you can't really tell what it's supposed to be showing. Does it not defeat the purpose of a demo when no one knows what's being shown?
Devin Johnston
He says it's showing off what's called Emixer which is an emitter layer that is over the BSDF. I said that it's hard to tell if this is a new feature since all the other video's we've seen seem to do the same thing, but he says we've never seen it before. AJLynn
...Tom and Mike seem to thing this is the most revolutionary thing that has ever been seen.... Remember two things: It is usually almost impossible to figure out what Tom's talking about. For all we know if could be amazing, but we're not going to find out until we can try it ourselves. Mike has made it clear that he considers Maxwell successful when it does what he wants it to do. What he wants it to do is render images from Star Wars, presumably with a good enough approximation of the original sets, lighting and cameras that he can use it in his effort to reproduce the original version of the film. (I don't know what exactly it's for - animating the movie would be almost impossible, but maybe he needs sets, robots and spaceships for comping... We've already seen that he's got a very good R2D2 model going...) A worthy endeavor, but not necessarily the same thing everybody else is looking for. Adehus
Remember two things... In other words, Tom is incapable of explaining to us why the innovations in Maxwell will be good for helping out with Mike's projects. F'ing great...
Devin Johnston
Agreed, the scariest thing about Mike and Tom is they don't seem interested in Arch Viz at all. Mikes comments regarding the sun & glass is a perfect example of how something that critical to our industry doesn’t seem to be that big of a deal to him. My fear is that Maxwell is being pushed into a direction that may not be ideal for Arch Viz users but may be perfect for people doing things like product prototyping. Tom said that well get a full feature list this week at which point I'm guessing there are going to be a lot of unhappy people, that's why we haven't seen one in over a year. jackb602
I have to say that navigating the Maxwell forums became slightly less painful when I started to treat Tom's postings as the gibberish they are. Trying to find meaning in them is a lost cause. In any case, based on Next Limit's history so far their only option for credibility is to produce results. Words are meaningless for them. Once people I trust (i.e. not moderators or Maxwell kool ade drinkers) have gotten their hands on the alleged 1.0, then I'll take a look.
