JoHnStUmP
Ok, well let me start off by saying that I wasn't sure where to put this topic so I'm putting it here. As of right now I'm a freshman in High School and I'm doing a Career report on Architectural Drafting. I've always been interested in that field because I have good Geometry, Art, and Computer skills. I was wondering if any of you were in that job area and could tell me a little about it and what you do in it. If you could that would be great. Much Thanks to all! Please state: Working Conditions Salary (On average not yours) Experience Needed Benefits Thanks again.
Devin Johnston
I took drafting in High School which is what got me interested in Architecture in the first place. I worked as a draftsman for several years before I graduated from College and then went into Arch Viz. Drafting as a career can be somewhat tedious if that is the only thing you do, picking up red lines all day long gets old after a while. Even as an Architectural intern you will typically have to endure several years of being a "CAD Monkey" before you gain enough knowledge to know how a building is put together. If you like drafting and you want to do it as a career I would suggest getting a job at an architectural firm or engineering company for a summer so you can get a taste of the business. You will be doing this job for 30 or 40 years so you had better make sure you like it before you commit your self to it.
JoHnStUmP
Ok well I have 4 more years before I need to decide what to do. And plus in this project I lean into alot of other architectural fields as well so I'll get to know oher jobs as well. I appriciate the positive feedback. I'm gonna keep my mind open for all sorts of jobs but I'm pretty sure I want to be in the architectural surrounding.
Devin Johnston
Just remember that Drafting is really nothing like what you would be doing as an Architect or a Designer. I had the same misconception when I was in school; I thought as an Architect all I would be doing is drafting which isn't the case at all. Don't get me wrong you will do this, but a lot of your time will be involved in other things like project admin. At my firm we do hire High School or College kids to intern in the summer and I would suggest that if Architecture is your interest you at least visit an architect’s office to see what kind of work you would be doing.
