need help with my material editor

i cannot see the materials in the material editor... why is that? The maps do not show up on the material editor in the library bu when I apply them on the model they appear...It is driving me crazy...what did I do..or undo...3dbuzz kids think I should reinstall max ...I can not see any of library images and the material editor is colors not a sample of the texture...did I turn something off...why do I know enough to keep me in trouble and never enough to get out of trouble...this has never happened to me before...I need to get this textured by tomorrow and I can't see what I am dealing with...ahhh...please help

I do not think I made sense before...wha I need help with is the material map browser...if i use targa files of my desktop....they show up find in my material editor...the problem is the material map browser...does not show up as items in the material editor just shades of color but then they appear on the model if I apply them but I can change them in the view of the materail editor does this make sense...I don't unmderstand what is going on ...but the problem seems to be in the MATERIAL MAP BROWSER any ideas

i don't know if this is helps or not, or if this is what you are talking about, but have you tried switching form the "view list" setting to one of the others like "view list + icons", "view small icons", or "view large icons"? they are the buttons above the list of material/map types. hope that works for you.

are you by chance using a third party plugin like vray for materials.

 

for instance if you use vray materials and don't have vray selected for your materials shader, all vray materials won't show up in the material editor
