bigroo
Hi all, I am just a little curious (being a recent convert to the joys of 3D - all previous work was 2D) as to the input you all have regards to the final product. Do you model only or model and render or just render? I only ask as I currently enjoy modelling and have only started to explore the different render engines. From what I know so far, it seems that the modelling is the easy part. The skill is in the visualisation. Maybe I'm just asking how you started out and if that role has changed. My experience so far is that I have been modelling but that may be down to my inexperience to produce a high quality end product that can sell & keep selling. Anyway I know what I enjoy doing and I enjoy doing this. BTW I have been reading 3D World and that seems to concentrate on animations mainly IMO. Is there a publication that deals mainly in Archviz? STRAT
i do the full works (other than dvd authoring). visualisation is everything from modelling through to texturing, rendering and animating. i've basically been doing the same roll since i started all those years ago. yup, it's my dream job. if i won the lottery i'd do this gig for free. btw, 3DWorld mag does have specific architectural features every now and then, and it's strongly rumoured they're releasing a special architectural suppliment in the next issue or

Good to hear that about 3D World too!
STRAT
i started out on a drawing board long before computer art in the industry was invented. then, when basic 3d drawing was slowely being generally introduced, me and a collegue quit the architects we were working for and decided to set up shop specifically catering for 3d architecture, using autocad, 3dstudio for d.o.s. and animator pro. we were one of the first dedicated 3d firms in the UK at the time (probably going back well over 10 years now) and to be honest, business wasn't particulaly wonderfull. it took a loooooong time before developers and clients decided to take the leap into using cgi to sell their projects. needless to say we only survived about 5 years before dispanding. inbetween freelancing, i joined Wales's largest firm of architects to set up an in-house cgi unit, and been there ever since, but yes, to answer your question, right from the very start i've been more or less doing the same job day in day out - drawing up large 3d autocad developments and rendering out stills and animations in a 3d rendering package.
