sutaih
I know the basics, but are there any tricks out there to get a really nice water effect?

BunGHoLe
Well I have some questions about water so I'll post them in this thread rather than creating a new one. I want to ask how can I create a waves for a water. For example if I have a character in a boat that is rowing with an oar. If I want to create the waves triggered by the oar how should I proceed. Should I do something with particle system or...? And if I want to have a camera underwater which is the best way to create the blue tint of the water and to create some bubbles. And how do you prefer to create big lakes or oceans. I'm thinking of plane with noise but the results are not very good...
aligrafix
with noise you can only create still water not animated! for animated water you need to do this with waves modifier and volume select modifier. This is good option to create sea or ocean BUT for the second question, you want to create a boat splashing through water and wana create waves due to boat, you need to work with reactor. 3ds max reactor can do this. refer to tutorials of 3dsmax which come with the package, there is a tutorial of reactor in max there. if you are not satisfied with that, pm me or email! regards
manta
you can animate the noise map by animating the phase parameter, very simple...
BunGHoLe
I look through the tutorials in 3dsm and I got nice results 10x. But do you know why can I only make animation of 100 frames....I reset my scene and first adjusted the frames to be 1000 and then I made the reactor stuff but it still exports only 100 frames. kdavenport
In order for reactor to simulate more than the default 100 frames, you'll need to go into the Utilities panel, click the reactor button and set the simulation time in the Preview & Animation rollout; it is independent from the max timeline. BunGHoLe
10x dude Unfortunately I read your advice a bit too late...I already started to render the animation, but as soon as it's ready I'll post it here for some critiques...
BunGHoLe
I made it with reactor but I'm having some serious issues. I animated the boat and made it concave mesh - unyielding. I checked it unyielding in order the keyframes to work. But unfortunately when is unyielding it doesn't interact with the water in many ways. The boad make waves but that's all...and it wouldn't have been a problem if there wasn't water inside the boat. I checked the box landscape and selected the boat but was still filled with water. I thought that this happens because the boat I made with line and than I poly modeled it....so I made another one with box with similar shape. First I tried to do it just as an unyielding object. I wanted to create a hole in the water by the box so when I use for the rendering the actual boat the plane would be deformed and it wouldn't be inside my boat...unfortuantely this didn't work. Then I tried the same thing but I selected for landscape the box.....without result. I'm thinking if I make an animated material for the plane and make for mask an image with the same shape as my boat floor that follows the path of the boat I won't have such issue...but I think that there should be another way.... Any suggestions?
