Frosty
Personally I would use FormZ because it draws splines wonderfully and can place and rotate columns along said spline. Cinema can do the same thing with the Jenna plugin.
Chris Potts
Personally I would use Sketch Up 5. It given me more easy edit model. Then import 3DS into Max then add bit update edit other things in model. I have been used it since November.
Ernest Burden III
I usually model most of my work in Datacad. FormZ would be better if you can understand it, which I cannot. It never does things the way I want them, and it just beeps at me and tells me I'm stupid. I hate it. However, if you know how to use it well it should be great. SketchUp would also be good, but if you are going for high detail you may quickly outgrow it's abilities. CAD is great because of the snaps and very architectural feel. You should be working over a set of CAD file plans, elevations and sections. Rhino is good, also.
