JoHnStUmP
Hey, I saw this Google SketchUp program on your main page and it says free. Do any of you know if this is a good program for me to start out using since I'm young and don't have $950 to but an AutoCAD program? Can I get some of your thoughts on it please; that would be great, thanks.
Ricardo Eloy
Well, Sketchup is an awesome piece of software. In fact, many of the features implemented on AutoCAD 2007 are well-known Sketchup features. My thought: if Sketchup was worth trying before, now with a free version it's a must-have. It's not a precise as the AutoCAD software but its not bad.
Ernest Burden III
Sounds like you're off to a good start. Let's see what you can do with the free version. I already have the 'Pro' version, but I bet the free one is just as good in most important ways.
Christopher Nichols
The interesting thing is how it works with Google Earth.
AJLynn
In my experience, most architecture students come in knowing no CG at all - if you want to go into architecture in college, learning Sketchup and Maya (they have a free Personal Learning Edition on the Autodesk web site), and the ability to think in three dimensions that comes with it, would put you a couple of steps ahead. There's really no need to deal with Autocad yet - Autocad is boring, it's just for drafting, using it too much too early usually leads to bad design, and in most schools they'll teach you anyway, but not before they teach hand drawing. 3D - and being good enough at it to use it as a medium instead of just a tool - opens up interesting design possibilities. Ernest Burden III
learning Sketchup and Maya ... and the ability to think in three dimensions that comes with it... You got that backwards. The ability to think in three dimensions comes first. 3D progeams do not teach it, they allow you to express what you already understand. And I completely agree that hand drawing is a vital skill to any artist or architect, even if they choose to work with computers.

Agreed And I completely agree that hand drawing is a vital skill to any artist or architect, even if they choose to work with computers. I concur Sketchup is an incredible program, great tool for almost anyone in the Archi field to have at their disposal. Never have tried it with Google Earth, but it looks intriguing. I think we'll have to agree to disagree - for me, working in computer 3D was what got me from two dimensional thinking to three.
JoHnStUmP
Alright guys thanks for the great feed. Right now I'm just messing with it, building a city and such. Nothin great. I want to get a feel of how to do these things before I start building the more difficult complex projects.
