Render engine(s)

depends what package you order. check out Maxon's site.

with the basic package you get just the ray tracer. with the XL package and above you get the Advanced Renderer. the only other render engine at this point in time is Final Render 2, which costs extra. maxwell will be out imminently, and vray is in the pipes.

Thank you Stephen. Any thoughts about FR2 vs Vray?

whatever floats your boat.

for reasons i cant agree with, most peeps think vray is the best render engine since sliced bread. (not that i'm dissing it in anyway mind you (quality wise i think Maxwell is better))

FR2 gives great imagery, but is fiddly and somewhat unstable, specially rendering over a network, which is one of it's biggest sales points. Vray is superb, but not out for another load of months and months for c4d.

personally, c4d's own advanced renderer does it for me. the reason i jumped ship from max to cinema.

but hey, whatever flys your flag. noon is better, only different, with their own pros and cons. if you're new to this, you really want to master the 3d software's own resident render engine FIRST, before spending cash on a plugin renderer which, to a good artist, will produce the same result.

I've not seen better images than Maxwell..I do have a license and will use for interior stills, but not for animations. I've been using FormZ with its Lightworks renderer which was quite satisfactory for exterior still shots, but falls short of my goals for interior stills and animations...so looking to make a move.

Since you've used MAX also, and "jumped ship", how would you compare the Mental Ray render engine in MAX to C4D's advanced renderer? C4D is my leading choice so far as I'm using Archicad to model.

Not altogether new to this, but have been playing in the minor leagues :o and looking to play with the majors  .

i'm not altogether uber familier with MR since i jumped ship before it's max arrival, but from my limited use, and general knowlege, it's just another tool. a fantastic render engine but again, slow and fiddly.

As far as you know, is C4D Advanced Renderer a faster engine then Mental Ray?

as far as i know. c4d's render engine is super fast if you know how to use it properly

But who among us knows how to use it? There are no answers here or on cgTalk, where there are many threads about how to use it. Or, to put it another way, if C4D's engine is fast, then I'm glad I'm not using anthing else. Having spent years using Lightscape, I am amazed at what passes for fast these days.

FinalRender2/C4D is faster than C4D's native engine and produces better looking results. Unfortunately it isn't stable enough yet to rely upon.

Ernest, I don't follow what you're saying here, are you using it? I gather from what you also said that not very many people have figured out how to use C4D's own advanced renderer.

Are you still using Lightscape?

Yikes! Don't any of these applications have it together???

Not for Cinema they don't. fr2 is really close. I really like it, just not the crashing render clients and less often the main render.

AR is good enough, but too hard to 'use it right' in my opinion. And I've tried.

No, I am not using Lightscape anymore, about one year ago I decided I must jump onto C4D's AR completely, though as of this weekend I've decided I've had enough of it. I'm hoping fr2 get a service patch that helps with some problems, or the new vRay/C4D connection works well.

AR is tightly integrated in C4D so anything you can display you hit render and it will do it. But for big arch-vis stuff I'm not happy with the performance.
