Vray Cornell box

I just want to share this experiment with you about Vray.

I used a Cornell box as principal scene to work on GI, shadows, lights, reflection/refraction, caustics,... and all what I could render with Vray :D

 

I used differents high quality settings to compare the GI engines.

U can see that at the bottom of each renders...

 

Another detail : When I'm using QMC for primary bounces, I'm always using Adaptative QMC for the AA (1/20). And if IrrMap is active, that will be Adaptative subdivision (1/4). So don't be affraid about the grain on the render when QMC is active on primary bounces, it's just to be as close as possible to the "real" render, and cause the resolution isn't enough big.

 

1st Tests : Only Diffuse

A fast render, really, but the lightening is not great, and what about the shadows ? really bad. If you look closer the the right box, just at the floor, Irrmap blur too much this area >:/

So changing secoundary bounces to Lightcache, let's see if we can get better shadows and lightening...

Oh yesss :cool: The Global illumination is much better, and as fast as the standard options (Irr+QMC), the shadows still bad >:/ The front one as before, but Irrmap cause another bad thing, if you are using QMC for secoundary or Lightcache... same problem, and here it is :

As u can see, Irrmap left, same blurry shadow >:'(

So if you care about quality, don't forget to use the "Very High" preset with 50/40 or much for Hsph subdivs and Interp sample.

 

 

Now, we know that Irrmap is not the best solution for High quality renders, another problem, when you try to make an animation, the Irrmap cause several flickering on the blurry areas we saw before.

But don't forget it, for many renders that could be the best solution, easy to set with the presets, fast rendering, and not so bad quality with lightcache as secoundary bounces. The best method for quality/time.

Ahhhh ! Here a good result but time to render is about 3-4 times more than using the Irrmap >:/

But the quality is there, shadows and lightening is great, it's the exemple I took to compare the box shadow, on the red corner.

I think it's definitly the best method to get a good result.

But Vray can make a bit better, with more time but.... :rolleyes:

Yes, using photon map.... Photon mapping can give us better shadows, better caustics, and we got sweets parameters on the rollout to configure it. Sure that it's slower, harder to configure, but we will gain some lil' details, the details I love ^^ Look the front box

(up : QMC + Photon map)

(down : QMC + Lightcache)

Here we can get a Very high quality render, but for much time spend to configure the render, and that will be more and more if we use caustics, many lights,....

 

Each rendering process get his own quality and render time, everyones are great for any king of desire result, just choose the one prefer ^^

I hope that could help someones, interest others, and I will still making these tests and give you results to know what's possible to do with Vray and what's not.

Let's see how to control our reflection really easily..

Here a simple method...

Pure white in reflection, check fresnel reflection, and then, control with frensnel reflecion IOR Here a try ;)
