raterry
Hi all, Can anyone recommend a tutorial or know the best way to achieve this look? I have MAX 7 , Mental ray but I'm not real proficient with MR shaders. I'm trying to replicate this picture of a bar top of yellow onyx diffuse lit from underneath. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. -=Rob

pixelperfectg
Neat, I've never seen onyx used like that before. At any rate, since it's a translucent/SSS effect you're after, you may want to try the SSS fast Skin material....yeah, skin material..hear me out first! Naturally it's pretty good at simulating skin, but I've found it does a decent job at things like plastic & marble as well. I've attached a quick render to show a simple example. If it looks like something you want to try, and you don't have any luck with it...let me know and I'll send you the file. Jeff
raterry
Jeff, I tried a SSS mat but it looked like (expletive) so I just tried to experiment. I like the solution I came up with but there is something about your that looks a bit richer. I'd definately be interested in your technique. I appreciate your help. -=Rob

raterry
Thanks Jeff, I recieved your file and implemented what you did. I really like how it looks but I think there may be a problem. The table itself is one of if not the main light source and I can't seem to get that SSS mat to "be" a light source as I can only get it to have that nice diffused light look with it being illuminated by other lights. Can that be done without using a multiple lights with include/exlude situation? -=Rob
pixelperfectg
Afraid not, the SSS material is set to absorb the light, not produce it. I'm not sure if it will work, or if it would look right...but you could try putting a glow(lume) shader in those texture slots and see if it will emit any light. In theory I suppose it should...but I'm pretty sure that would mess up the SSS effect. I think the best idea is just as you mentioned: Multiple lights with exclude options, or revert back to your previous material setup.
