Hello everyone, first post in a long time in work section. I was after some feedback on the attached image. Im trying to develop a style that is good for my current work environment. There are constant design changes and on a lot of projects the 3d is just a design tool.

Question: Anyone know of a good material to make the buildings and trees look like cardboard? (I would drop the toon effect obviously)

Using max 8 and Vray.

Thanks,

Tom.

it's a nice simple scene. why not print it out, trace over it (in feltpen) with some shooting over lines, scan your hand drawn trace back in, and overlay it?

for a scene like that the whole process is less than a half hour job.

Nice idea Strat, Ill try it. Delivery style hasnt been decided yet, thats why i asked about the overshoot. However, Im kind of going for the 'oh look, its a render of a photo of a model, isnt that clever...' angle. Ive never had to render card close up before, dont really know where to start.

Attached is what i mean (imagine the card).

thanks.

Tommy, have you ever tried finalToon? I bought it for this very thing. It does the overshot lines and it works fine with vray. I've never really tried vrays toon effect, but from what I understand it is very limited.

I've seen some renderings with that cardboard look you mention. I guess the secret is to, somehow, show a little difference between the faces, just like a real model would show. Maybe you could add an Edit Poly modifier, detach all faces as elements and play with their scales (outline them, maybe). That way, if the desing team decides to change it, all you have to do is throw the EPmod away and work with your previous model.
