Brian Smith
Has anyone worked with the new HD-DVD players yet? Thinking about purchasing one and creating a few sample animations to get some current clients to buy into high-def. Even at 1280x720 the wow factor should go up tremendously. Anyone have any experience yet with them and know of any playback issues or insight? Brian
manta
Well I for one am not all that excited about doubling my resolution, pretty much doubling my render times, sorry don't mean to be a kill joy...
Brian Smith
Actually, I believe it would closer to quadrupling the render time. Obviously a big price but also a reason to charge a lot more for very little extra man hours. Computer hours is another story. In my neck of the woods, every developer is looking for a way to outdo the other and stand out - because of so many developments in the works. One way to get effective use out of the hd players without added rendering times would be to render a very high resolution image, such as 4000 pixels wide, and create an animation from just the one image, or multiple highres images (ie panning the view around). If you are already rendering at a high resolution for the purpose of printing, there is no extra work involved, except a little more during the video editing. manta
See the problem is, I don't see alot of Arch animations to be drewling over right now, and its not for lack of talent, its because of the time constraints involved, But I sure would like to see one... anvaraziz
HD-DVDs r available in market ?
Brian Smith
Yes they've been available for about a month. While it's very true about the time constraints, some clients of mine want to stand out above all the others. In SW Florida, there's so many developments going up, the competition is fierce. Everybody's got a welcome center where they show floor plans and in many cases 3D animations. Many of my clients I've talked about HD have shown tremendous interest and are willing to pay heavily for it. The kind of money that would allow me to buy the additional machines necessary to offset the time involved. Many of the welcome centers already have HD displays and they are primed for it. Like I said in my last post, even if all I provide is a HD video that shows individual renderings where the camera pans around, that's enough for many. manta
I might be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure that you don't need a HD-DVD-R to make a HD animation, unless you plan on it lasting for 2 hours, its all about capacity, a 3 minute animation at HD resolution should fit on a standard DVD... Brian Smith
Good question. I doubt that you can play HD animations from a standard DVD. I guess until the recorders come out it's not possible. I guess I'll have to wait til the end of the year when the recorders come out.
Devin Johnston
There are two problems with that, one is a standard DVD player can't play back high def, and your video editor must be able to export the animation in high def.
manta
How much are the disks, I can't find any, infact I keep comming across articles from a year ago or more...
Brian Smith
My apologies, I guess I didn't read anvar's question properly. No you can't get HD-DVD R disc yet. The best you can do for the next year is play from your computer. Just found this... Hitachi Maxell and Mitsubishi Kagaku Media/Verbatim will commercialize HD DVD-R discs in spring next year, at the same time as the launch of HD DVD recorders and PCs with built-in HD DVD drives by hardware manufacturers, including Toshiba.
