vodka79
i was tasked to do a campus for a school with about 10 buildings, however, the client can only provide me with certain plans and elevations. Plans and elevations are not available due to very old buildings or lost plans. How do i work on it? More ever the client wants details and wants me to protrait out as much views in 2 image. The buildings are mostly 1 or two storeys, and if i use eye level, i doubt everything will be shown out. How do i resolve this?
FlytE
perhaps do some research into the buildings history, or architecture of that time in the area. From that you may be able to obtain a common story height that was used as well as things like window style and dimensions. There is also a number of different items of software that will create 3D models from photographs. Some are better than others, maybe check this thread out for some info.... http://www.cgarchitect.com/vb/16911-finished-cathedral-key-seattle-building-models.html
BobM
For quick design use SketchUp import the site and buildings from google earth or land survey etc and work from there. Go to sketchup.com and download the free version and try out
JamesTaylor
i preseume the missing plans and elevations are for existings building.....how about getting some photo reference material, you should be able to work out dims from features (brick size x no. of courses etc). If this means spending a day on site or slows down your turn around size explain that it'll have to be reflected in the price of the job.
Devin Johnston
This should be the responsibility of the architect not the 3D viz person, if they want you to do it I would definitely charge them a premium for having to do field work, preferably by the hour not one lump sum. Photographs are good but your going to have to take lots of measurements especially if they want something detailed, that would also include sidewalks and parking lots. Tommy L
What kind of views are you going to do? for distance shots you could photograph the buildings and paste the images onto the geometry. This would ensure things are roughly the right size and less detail in the model will compensate for the time spent on site.
alekzab
i been down that road exactly. same situation. what i did is a photograph which i then flatten in photoshop, then i measured the footprint and one elevation of the building. then i took the flatten image in ADT and I gave them the scale based on the measurement and then it becomes proportioned. do this to as many sides and buildings as needed and youll have the buildings done in no time.
