File keeps crashing!

Okay peeps,

I have this interior file that has 3700+ objects, a meshing size of 20' with the radiosity solution calculated. With the solution, it creates 1,456,202 mesh elements. The scene stats are as follows:

1,097,723 faces

Memory Used 1324.3M

34 lights

29 shadow mapped

The problem with all of this is that when I start to render the file it crashes! Is there a way of allocating more memory to the file/Program or am I dealing with a huge file. I need all the info in the interior space. I could make the meshing size larger, but I'm not trying to make it anymore flat looking than what it will look like with the settings I have now.

My computer has a 3.4 ghz processor, dual and 3gb of RAM. You would think that I would have a problem at all. If you could let me know ASAP that would be great! Thanks for your help!

I have never checked to see how much memory is used and the number of mesh elements created, but have you tried enabling regather indirect illumination as well as adaptive sampling? If you are unfamiliar with this, adaptive sampling allows you to have a smaller sampling mesh where needed, and larger where it's not needed. This may decrease your number of mesh elements significantly.

Here is a link to microsoft that goes through allocating memory. Not sure if it is what you are looking for or not. I was unable to figure out how to apply it to my system, but I haven't had the time to really look into it much.

Good luck.

Thanks Tim,

I'll have to try your suggestions. I've used the adaptive sampling before. I just have to sit down and figure out the size of the mesh. That might be a good solution for this file. Plus the other solution about allocation, I will have to try when I have time. I was looking for a quick allocation solution like if there was a way to beef up the memory within the program. In the mean time I will look into the adaptive sampling solution. I'm also trying the bitmap pager under preferences to see if that will help. Have you tried that before?

is the interior just one open space where all the objects can be seen at the same time? if not and you actually have a no. of rooms in this internal space try hiding the objects which are not seen.

Tims suggestion of adaptive sampling will be a major help and if you have access to it i'd suggest incorporating it as part of your standard work flow

James thanks for the reply. Yes it is one open space with 21 cubicles in it. I've turned off about all that I can. I have to generate a panoramic of the space. So I can't really hide anything that I haven't already. That is why the file is large. I'm going to try to keep working on the adaptive sampling to see if I get any results with it. There is something else that might be causing it to crash. I have an attached file, with light objects circled. Could this be a problem?

Although I haven't worked with VIZ for several years, I'm 99% sure that the only thing causing your crashes is the number of objects. Notice that when you start the rendering process, VIZ has to run through the 'Preparing Objects' phase. The more objects you have, the memory that must be set aside preparing these objects for all the things that go on behide the scenes. All the objects have to be tagged, categorized, assigned qualities and characteristics unique to the individual objects. Bottom line, you can fix the problem by reducing the number of objects. As a rule, I never let a scene get above 1000 objects, though in 95% of my scenes I won't have more than a few hundred. How do you reduce the number? Attach objects (Edit Mesh or Edit Poly) that have the same materials applied, or at the very least Attach with Multi/Subobject materials. Hope that helps.

Brian,

Thanks for the response. All day I've been trying to get it to render. I believe you might be correct about the objects, at least in this situation. I'm going to have to go in tomorrow and redesign the cubicles that are in this room. There are 25 of them. I've tried everything else others have given me advise on so this is the only process I have left. I thank you and everyone that help try to solve this problem. I will let you know if this works.

Have you tried rendering in regions? Turn off geometry that is not in the region (selection sets) and render. Then unhide those items and hide the other ones not in the region. I had this problem with Viz2006 and Vray. I had to do the above steps to get it to work.

Good Luck.
