Devin Johnston
I honestly don't see how he is using Maxwell to do any kind of animation, as it is now its completely imposable unless you create your own programs to delete and submit files. I was kind of shocked when he told me he wasn't going to do the tutorials, I guess I can kind of understand he might have a big work load right now, but I make it a policy never to promise anything unless I know for sure I'm going to be able to do it. And yes his Superman logo kicks A$$, I can't wait for this movie I think it's really going to be something.
Adehus
Just downloaded Modo... never used it before in my life. After 30 minutes of playing around with it, I already have a much better feel for it's materials than I do with Maxwell. There's no reason Maxwell's materials need to be so ridiculously difficult. It's not a hero render, but FWIW:
CHE
Nice test Adehus. What was the render time? We need a Modo Forum!!!
Adehus
Thanks... render time was 5m 28s at 1280x1024. And yeah, I'd like a modo forum... it may very well be my next rendering app.
Devin Johnston
It would only take Maxwell 20 or 30 hours to render that same scene, and it would look at least 10% better.
CHE
I am running an exterior test right now...Modo is sweet!!!
Sawyer
Yeah but it's the grain that makes it look real. Wheres the grain?
Devin Johnston
Yes Maxwell renders totally photorealistic grain that is physically accurate, let's see your MODO do that!
Adehus
OK, made a quick change... now it's PERFECT! Don't drool on your keyboards, folks!

Adehus
chairs look like are floating True enough... one of these days I'm going to have to look at the manual and figure out the GI settings
leoA4D
Drooling on my keyboard is not the problem. My problem is I need to dump an app to make room to try out Modo, MAC V.! Hmmmm, which app is not performing as promised, may not be usable for another 6-12 months (for which I will have to lay out some more money to get the usable version), and can be dumped and not missed? BTW, VrayForC4D looks promising.

Bongo51
It's more accurate to type in a domain 128.128.128.128/index.htm isn't it? that's the description of what V1 has become. Why use a DNS when you can just type the url number directly. The materials editor needs either simplified and well thought out controls on the main layer (context sensitive options tied to these) OR at the very least a host of presets. Glass, etc. I was a project coordinator developing software titles for over 8 years. I can tell you with some assurance that an interface LIKE THAT wouldn't even made it to the drawing board in my shop! Even professionals who have very big brains don't want to be distracted by thought problems where NOT REQUIRED. The idea of any artistic tool is to allow expression to the end product. Try using an airbrush if before every single stroke you needed to adjust flowrate, replace the paint, reseat the needle... etc. It would be at the bottom of some box within a week. What the beta offered AND DELIVERED was clear and simple path between the artist's creativity and the digital canvas. THIS is what got me to open my wallet. I consider the horrendous and Borg-like mountain of ability which V1 has become is 180 degrees from what was promised. I have no problem learning software. I develop it... I have a knack for interfaces. So, I did the college try with studio. I cracked the manual, methodically connected all the dots of how to accomplish my goals. Figured out the numerous issues and odd, and unintuitive enigmas and was creating renders. The rub.. I don't like it. It's like studio is like trying to paint but with giant sheepskin mitts on. Anyone ever used the material editor in Shade? It seems clunky and simplistic on the surface (no pun intended) but use it... it quickly has you smiling. You can dial in the most intimate of material in only SECONDS. I seriously don't think anyone, ANYONE at NL has any formitable GUI experience. Studio has a 'pretty' interface, but it was designed alphabetically. I had one client hire me to rebuild FOUR of their ailing production CD-ROM titles. One was a 3D world atlas, and had been designed in a similar manner. The geographical and physical properties were all acronymized and put on numerous tabs. You were presented with an open book with 30 tabs ranging in illuminating titles like NNR, and DDS. That was the first thing to go... and you wouldn't believe the resistance. Studio is exactly that... lets throw all the functionality that is blue... over here... and over here... ummm... let's have all the lists. Oh and we need to have a toolbar... let's put it... here. Oh, and a nifty earth that spins for location...what? The users just want a 3D ball illuminated that they can move the sun around by dragging... NO that's not as fun! sigh. Fran
Hey Ian, want to see the shader editor from hell? Of course you do! http://www.surrealstructures.com/ShaderBasic.html I wrote this editor for VirtuaLight shaders about 4 years ago. You can click on the tabs to see the other pages. Actually, looking at it now, it's not so bad. I'm surprised I can even remember what all the parameters mean.
