FlytE
Can anyone give me any pointers, or point me in the right direction of a tutorial etc, on how to create realistic spotlighting (my renderer is vray). By this i mean not a smooth scallop downlight, but something like the spots these guys use in their images: http://www.cgarchitect.com/gallery/image_spotlight.asp?galleryID=34272 http://www.cgarchitect.com/gallery/image_spotlight.asp?galleryID=33868 http://www.cgarchitect.com/gallery/image_spotlight.asp?galleryID=32905

FlytE
OK, thats not all i need hah! Ive donwoaded the uk pack from erco and i found this free ies viewer that is floating about. I also checked out that evermtion tutorial but if i am being brutally honest I dont think it says much about ies lighting , especially considering that is the title of the tutorial - most of it is on the modelling/rendering of the room etc. Anyway i think i have got to where i need to be with it... except for one thing. I now have a mass of ies files and still no real idea what they look like. Yes im using the ies viewer but the i find the grid image quite diffficult to read and doesnt really give me enough of an indication of what the light will be like when i render it. Can anyone give any tips on specific ies files/lights that they have used in the past and/or know to be good? Im looking for a spotlight with a varying scallop- not too strong but will light the immediate area well.
Tommy L
I would build a test model, render out a bunch of different lights, then library the ies files with their corresponding test image. I have foubnd a couple of really good ies lights and tend to use those for everything rather than trying to match the light to the specified fitting. wilky9
http://maxcadproductions.com.sapo.pt/ies29.zip The older one shown above (v2.4) doesn't have the render feature, I think. This one (2.9) does. Load your file, and the render option will appear in the box at the left.

John Dollus
Please keep in mind that IES files are very specific to lenses, lamp types and housings. I see these distributions used inappropriately all the time because they 'look cool'. It is important to understand how the distribution is generated so you can use it appropriately. Remember lens flares, anyone?

Remember lens flares, anyone? i like this comment. i have occasionally used a IES with more caustic rings than the fixture would generate purely tomake the space look more interesting. typically though, i try to match the IES to the actual spec'd fixture for the space, but i am relying on the manufacturer to have that information posted for me.
