What do you mean by "design" and what kind of work do you want to do? (I wouldn't want to "design" in Max or Autocad unless I were using it for very specific reasons. If I'm designing on a computer I'm usually using Sketchup or Cinema if I'm doing parametrics.)

For learning I would definitely recommend downloading demo versions - don't spend the kind of money they charge for this stuff until you're sure what you want. You can get demos of Max or Viz from Autodesk (or buy a book on one of those programs that comes with a CD copy of the demo), a demo version of Cinema4D from maxon.net that does everything except save files (download the documentation from that web site also and see the video tutorials at c4dcafe.com), a free version of Sketchup from sketchup.google.com, and the free Maya Personal Learning Edition, also from Autodesk.

That's a lot to try out, so I'd tell you the following:

-If you want to import 3d Autocad files and render them, Viz is probably the way to go - it has most of the features of Max that you would use for still image work, but is cheaper than Max. It's not great for animations. It's decent for modeling. Viz and Max have the best assortment of 3rd party render engines, including Vray, which is the most popular one right now in architecture.

-If you want all that plus good animation capabilities, you want Max. Max is currently very popular in arch vis.

-If you don't rely on Autodesk product interoperability and want something that's powerful yet intuitive, Cinema4D might be best. I also like Cinema because I do a lot of parametric modeling.

-Maya is incredibly powerful and somewhat harder to learn than the other options. Most Maya users are in other animation specialties.

-Sketchup is great for most modeling work, but does not have a render engine. Maxwell works with Sketchup but I can't honestly recommend Maxwell, and there is a Vray plugin being worked on, but it's not available yet. A lot of people like to do their modeling in Sketchup, export a 3DS file and then use Max or Viz for rendering.
