floating point problem

i am going to do my best to sound like i know what i am talking abut.

 

i am allegedly working in linear color space. i have my 'color corrections' adjusts in the Vray frame buffer, and the 'use color curves correction' enabled. i render an image, and save it as either an HDR or an EXR image. i then open it in Photoshop. in theory, Photoshop should properly identify the floating point, and set the correct gamma. it is not. i have to go.. image - adjustments - exposure, then key in a gamma of 2.2 to get it to look like it did in the Vray frame buffer.

 

however...

 

if i send the exact same file out to backburner, and let it render, and save as either an HDR or EXR, it is fine. i open the image in Photoshop, and the gamma is correct. the image can even render on my machine using server, and it will be fine.

 

so, anyone want to ponder at what i am doing wrong? ...am i set up wrong?

 

my monitor is calibrated to a 2.2 gamma. i have Vray color mapping set to 'Linear multiply'. i have the color correction curve enabled. i have 'enable gamma/LUT correction' checked in my max preferences. i have the Max gamma set at 2.2 (which the frame buffer ignores anyway). under 'Bitmap Files' i have the input Gamma set to 2.2, and the Output Gamma set to 1.0.

 

i thought this setup was correct, but due to my problem with Photoshop not finding the correct gamma point, i am wondering if i have something set wrong.

brian (bkittsarch) in our office helped me figure it out. i was sure i read that it didn't matter if you had the 'use color curves correction' enabled when you saved the file. apparently i was wrong. if i disable that, and save, then it processes fine in Photoshop.

 

since you can not sav the buffer correction in preview in the file, then it will not be enabled when it is sent out to the renderfarm. which is the reason it was coming back correct.
