AJLynn
I'm having a bit of a hard time getting good answers to these, maybe somebody here with RAID eperience can help: I have a Dell with SATA striped RAID using the Intel controller on the MB. I'd like to defrag the array then nondestructively change the partitioning. -Can Norton Spped Disk defrag a RAID correctly? If not, what do I need to do, and can it be done without buying more software? -Does Partition Magic work with RAIDs?
AJLynn
Okay, never mind. I tried installing Intel Desktop Utilities and because of that I have a new question. With a Dell Precision 370, what does it mean if when you turn it on, you have a blank screen, the power light is orange instead of green and the fan is on high? It's out of warranty, but if it just means that my motherboard is fried that's not so bad, they're about $40 new on Ebay.

AJLynn
Heh. The Dell was incredibly cheap - probably 1/10 the Alienware price at the time thanks to Ebay - and right now I need to get rid of some computers, not buy more. Seriously, Alienware? For a desktop PC? What's the point? The only benefit I can see is that they use ugly cases.

I've got one of the Area 51 m7700 Alienware laptops and I really liked it at first, but now I'm not so sure. It's got some issues with getting too hot that are not real pretty. Also I had a problem with the part on the motherboard where the power comes in, apparently it fried so I called them to have them come out and perform some of their "on site" warranty service (that my company paid for), and they said we REALLY encourage you to send it to us to fix at our service facilities. Long story short, my IT guy caved and sent it in and it took over a month for me to get it back.
alfienoakes
Andrew, Get on the Dell forum, they are full of guys with similar tales of woe.. You can usually find what you are looking for in there.. Dells are pretty well put together. Company I work for uses them all the time, and I have only really had problems with HD's and Video cards.. the occasional battery etc.. Is this RAID on your desktop PC..? Andy
AJLynn
Yeah it's the desktop. Precision 370. Tried the Dell forums, no replies. But, you say you have had video card problems - did these happen to include various programs (Max, Sketchup) hanging when pulling up various file handling windows when used in OpenGL mode with a FireGL card? We have a bunch of 370s with v3100s and the drivers Dell provides; at home I have the same configuration with a v5100 and drivers from the ATI web site (which are newer) and it works fine, I'm wondering whether a driver update is what it needs or whether it's the 3100. alfienoakes
Definitely upgrade the drivers to the latest files, especially video. I think dell has drivers for certain items that sit around for years, then let you upgrade via the windows updates etc.. Doesn't always work though like that.
