jackb602
I guess time will tell. By the way, can you post a link to the thread? I couldn't find it over at CGtalk.
AJLynn
I want one! (One more thing I could be doing in MacOS instead of Windows...)
Ernest Burden III
can you post a link to the thread? I couldn't find it over at CGtalk. I think you're in it: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=349805 That image is just one little model with oddly segmented caustics, so I have no idea just how functional vRay is on Mac. But Vlado had something in mind by posting it.
Crazy Homeless Guy
those are all components of the max version, except the text window is named differently. in 3dsmax it is simply named 'Vray messages'. If you look at the first couple of lines in the text window, it says 'Vray Standalone Alpha Version for x86', which is interesting. The only other thing I notice of interst is "compiled with GCC compatible compiler, version 4". The 3dsmax is compiled with Intel C++ compiler, version 7.1. Not sure what that means if anything. All in all, it kind of reminds me when they posted the very first preview of the standalone version about a year and half ago. There really wasn't much to it, other than to announce that they were working on it.
AJLynn
I think what those messages mean, if anything, is that this is a pretty serious effort, and that it links up with the Linux port I've seen mentioned. There are a few MacOSX compilers out there that use GCC as a backend, which makes sense given the Unix core and GCC's support of C, C++ and Objective C. But it's very different from Intel's compiler, and the interface would need work going from Linux to MacOSX, so the port would involve a non-trivial amount of work on just about everything except whatever backend parts can be black-boxed. So to me the fact that they have this working to a point where they can post an image like that implies that they're considering it a serious project and will bring a product to market.
