drew101
Hello all, I haven’t posted I a while I have been busy getting a new job, after about 18 years away from architecture and doing various jobs along the way I have managed to get a start at a small local practice close to home manly doing 2D cad but some 3D. I had some free time over the weekend so I thought I would have a go at an indoor swimming pool I have seen a few on different forums and always wanted to have a go any crits are welcome as I have lots to learn. There is still some modelling to do but I just thought I would through some textures on it and do a quick render to see how it was looking. Modelled in Max 7 rendered in V ray
mahorela
nice start mate a lot to like about this, especially the modelling, I'd be licking my lips at the potential of this model. Very good start on the water as well, I'd make it a little less reflective but you will have plenty of tweaking time with it. A few lighting tweaks may be in order as well, just some warming up of the scene. but I love it:)
NOOXY
YES it's a good start can' wait to see the finished image...keep us posted

drew101
Thanks for the comments guys just a small update added a few textures, a bit of modelling on the rim of the pool and played with the lighting a bit. You are right Bob the water is a bit to reflective I will tone that down a bit Thanks Danny I am just doing this to fill the time and try to improve my work but I will do my best to finish it and I will keep you guys posted Michael if you send me an e mail I will send you the water mat
NOOXY
brighter and sharper than the first image...you're defenaely on the right track. the water looks much better too..nice work keep it up:D
FlytE
Looking Great! I was wondering, see your water... is the geometry just a thin 'slab' or is it the full depth of the pool?
drew101
Hi Andy the water is just a plane with the water mat on it
gfa2
I was just in some hotels over the last week or so and after seeing thier indoor swimming pools, I think the water should be more transparent. So we can see the bottom of the pool more, and maybe some caustics. Cool image.
Ray
^ I agree. The water looks good, but it looks like water that would be seen in an outdoor pond or similar.
drew101
Ok guys I have updated the water and the caustics have been there from the beginning but you couldn’t see them because of the high reflect thanks for the c&c
FlytE
v nice. I think the water is maybe a bit dark. I dont know whether its the mat itself or maybe the mat used on the pool wall but swimming pool water is usually turqoise and quite bright. A displacement mod used on those masonary walls would really bring them out alot!
gods418
its getting a lot better but i agree pool water should be more transparent and lighter and regarding caustics......... it will render a long long time, i have tried before faking caustics by shooting spotlights from the pool to the ceiling with projector maps of the caustic shadow... havent tried it in vray before.. my email is gods418@yahoo.com thanks drew. drew101
Hi guys I think the reason why the pool is so dark is because to get the caustic pattern just where the light hits the water I used an inverted caustic pattern as an opacity map on a plane but I have only used one direct light in the scene I think I might have to create another light in the same place as the direct light is now and use that to cast the caustic and exclude the plane from the original light I will try it tonight and post an update later. Michael i have sent you the water mat
FlytE
Can i make a suggestion? Instead of using a direct light try creating a vray sphere light. I usually make the size between 1000 and 2500 to give realistic soft shadows, then just match the intensity and colour to the one you have. I think it might give a more realistic direct light. Also, seeing as you are going to such efforts with the caustics of the pool, I think it would look really good if you could get the same sort of reflective caustics on the ceiling of the building.... just a thought! drew101
Ok guys I have worked on the water and I think I have sorter it More to down to the lighting than anything else I added a v ray light like you suggested Andy but I kept the direct light on as well to do the caustic pattern what do you think
sardesign
i personally think the water is pretty convincing... however, my eye keeps jumping up the background. the glass distracts me too much otherwise... it's nice to see a water scene.
mahorela
I know your doing this to improve your skills etc. If I were you I would lose the blue tiles around the edge, blue water, blue tiles, way too much blue. just my 2 cents
STRAT
floating columns
drew101
Hi Bob I think you may be right it is very blue I was thinking I would leave the blue tiles on the pool but change the surround Strat the base of the coloums are just under the surface of the tiles is the reason for the floating look because I need to move them further down or is it because I have my IR set to low Sardesign I haven’t got the windows in yet that is the HDRI showing in the background
erevan
Hello. Just my opinion No offense but I think water in a swimming pool is much more transparent. The water of the scene looks like sea water, that it reflecs the sky and is not as clean as a swimming pool's water. I've checked some images in google... Sometimes you could not even say if there's water or not if it weren't for reflections.
drew101
Hi Erevan I think it has a lot to do with the blue tile mat I have on the pool I am going to try some different tiles and see what that looks like Thanks for the c&c
parkdark
the rendering is fine but it would be better if you work more on the materials because it needs to be more realistic not like a drawing. Keep on working
drew101
Hello all, I made a few changes over the weekend Can anyone give me a reason why the corner has become over bright?
gods418
it might be the caustics reflecting there......... but it should be like that way... anyway it a whole lot better......... much much better pool clean and sharp..
