Microstation Modeling?

Recommended Posts

Hello, it has been over a year since my last post. Heck, it has been almost a year since my last actually rendering job, so I feel that I have fallen way behind in this industry. Well I have been asked to do a interior rendering for my new employer. Normally it would not be a problem, except the only software available for me to use is Microstation and SketchUp. In the past I have used VIZ.

So if anyone could let me know of any experiences with modeling and rendering with Microstation, it would be greatly appreciated. From what I gather, the client is looking for a fairly realistic rendering.

Thank you!!

Josh,

I have been modeling and rendering in Microstation for almost 10 years. It has come a long way in that time period and has begun to catch up to the other visualization specific software choices out there. For an interior rendering you would want to use the "PARTICLE TRACING" engine within Microstation. It takes a little time to get your lighting and materials set up correctly and will also require many hours to calculate the Particle Solution; which can be used to render many different views or animations.

There is a new book out which was just published by renowned Bentley visualization expert Jerry Flynn called "Rendering with MICROSTATION". Check it out as it covers all aspects of particle tracing. Bentley also has it's own visualization newsgroup which will answer many of your questions that may arise.

Another option which we have been testing is to take a Microstation model in DGN format...save a copy as a DWG...then dynamically link the DWG into 3DS MAX 8 and do all of our materials and lighting in MAX. We then render it out with V-RAY. The results are spectacular!

Have fun...
