I'd also suggest trying FormZ. I make alot of use of the NURBs modeling tools of FormZ to create organic tension fabric structures. I'll post an example tomorrow when I have access to my wotk machine.

 

There's also Bonzai, also made by Autodesksys, which supposedly has similar tools at a cheaper price point although I've never used it.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about. For this structure I created a series of curves and then used FormZ's controlled deformation tools to distort them. The resulting curves were then used to create NURBs surfaces via. boundary curves.
