Intel Mac for 3dsMax/AutoCAD/Maxwell???

Recommended Posts

Was wondering if anyone is using an Intel Mac with Bootcamp to run 3ds Max, Autocad and/or Maxwell and what their experience has been. I am finally getting permission to buy a serious machine for use at my company and my preference definitely is for Macs, but I must be able to run the above software - and it must perform as it would on a PC. If it can't, I would rather just get a really fast PC -- but I would love to go for the G5 Dual DualCore.

thanks in advance for sharing your experience or advice.

Dude, you are not one to talk about what other people will go to bed with.

Anyway.

A G5 is not an Intel Mac. A G4 or G5 can not run Bootcamp or Windows. What you want is a Macbook Pro or a new model iMac. Both of these have Intel Core Duo chips and ATI x1600 video, and can run Windows with Bootcamp. Not a non-Pro Macbook or a Mac Mini - these do have the Intel chip, but the video card is crap.

If you do this, you will need to download the Bootcamp package from the Apple web site, and you will need your own Windows XP Pro disc, which must not be an upgrade disc and must come with SP2. Shop around on the net, you can save 50% off the list price, but make sure you buy from a reputable dealer - there are non-legit copies all over the place, it's hard to tell the difference and if you have one you might not be able to install updates.

It does run Max, Viz, Autocad and Maxwell. Maxwell for Windows, that is - on the MacOS side it's really buggy on Intel. I recommend Googling a free program called Keytweak - to assign some Mac keys that don't make sense in Windows to Windows keys that aren't on the Mac keyboard.

thanks for the answer Andy, I can't beleive I didn't realize the G5 was not running on Intel now -- I guess with all the Mac/Intel buzz I just assumed it was -- and then when they announced Bootcamp I thought I could finally throw out my PC. Anyway, it seems like I might be better off staying with a nice high-end PC for now -- my company will expect this thing to be firing on all cylinders immediately out of the box with the money I'm asking for it.

If you care to make a recommendation, I'd be happy to hear -- I'll also search around here, I know its a popular discussion.

Thanks Again!

Sean
