djimifett
My first wip post, Maybe i should of called the grey lodge. If anyone has any tips for texturing in maya i'd love to hear from you. Im using using planar mapping but aligning it all in the uv editor is so laborious, f i had flat plans it would be ok but trying to match the pattern of the brick with the cornicing is tough. (see detail) Let me know what yo think, Djim Wireframe http://s18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/djimifett/lodge_wire.jpg

djimifett
Thanks for the reply, It is just this image.. with a corresponding bump map. http://s18.photobucket.com/albums/b101/djimifett/grass.jpg Im a beginner so nothing complex.
sardesign
i understand that lining the brick up is tough. i have similar problems with my current project and masonry units. model looks good. perhaps making each wall in different sections may help with your brick layout. djimifett
i did that actually (one map for each elevation) which took me a while.. and then my computer crashed. Which is the reason im a little sore about it. So im spending time on other projects until the anger subsides.
sardesign
are you using maya? or max? or cinema 4d?
djimifett
I thought i put it in the title, but apparently not. I used Maya 6 with mental ray and final gather. Out of interest, did you apply bump maps to the bricks on the hotel part of your c + h + r + s 'complex'. Also, i like the frosted glass, did you do that in 3dsmax or photoshop.. sardesign
the "bricks" are really 8x8x16 cmu (concrete masonry units). i applied a tile map to a standard material to form the "grout" and "block units" and then applied a cellular bump map and played around with the settings until i got something convincing. i'm going to apply a marble texture to that to add some "dirt" to it. if necessary i can post my settings... just let me know. frosted glass is a mental ray favorite of mine. i used a glass lume with a blur transparency + blur reflection. i also added a bit of bump to it so it doesn't look too flat and "waxy" when the camera is close. gods418
this reminds me of the cartoon i always watch as a kid after voltes v , its called flying house, they travel trought time to the biblical ages..
djimifett
The house will eventually have a steps up to the door and a sloped garden. sardesign I could be wrong but, i think cmu's are called breezeblocks here. Its quite an austere material to use, someone i knew said you should only use it for prisons and student accomodation. Maybe you could soften it with a bit virginia creeper or something? Perhaps im too soft for modernism.
