JamesTaylor
i'm on the verge of ordering a couple of machines to use as render nodes and i'd like to get a laptop as one of them as its not going to be in use 100% of the time it'll allow me to use it whilst visiting clients etc. My current render nodes are AMD Athlon x2 4800+ with 2GB of RAM and i'd like the laptop to be comparable in render speed to these. At the minute i have picked out this machine http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=5602&category_id=312&manufacturer_id=0 which i plan to try and upgrade to 2GB Ram (we have an account with CCL so it'd be easiest for me to order it from there) but i'd like some input from those with more knowledge than me as to my choice before ordering!! Thanks James
AJLynn
I can't comment on the pricing (I don't know the British market) but the 2.16 Core Duo is quite fast enough for render node use, though I'd recommend investing in one of those cooling fan bases to put it on. If the work you plan to do on it on the road is 2D, Powerpoint, stuff like that, the Quadro NVS would be fine, but don't expect Quadro 3D performance - that's what the Quadro FX is for. JamesTaylor
Thanks Andrew, would you think that spec laptop will be faster / slower / same as my desktops for rendering? i'd have thought any work done on it will very low level stuff, probably just browsing the web at home!! AJLynn
The laptop will be about as fast as a dual 3.4 or 3.6 Xeon, so same ballpark as the AMDs. It is sufficient for web browsing too, if you don't plan on using Internet Explorer
